HUSSAM KANAA HSCL 2415 LAB 5 Bilirubin Rose State College 10/5/2017 Abstract Bilirubin is the breakdown product of hemoglobin, hem, from red blood cells. On average there is 200 to 300 mg of bilirubin is produced every day, and the human body is able to excrete it. Excess amount of bilirubin can be toxic, but low amount of unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia might protect against cardiovascular diseases and tumor development. Bilirubin can help in diagnosing liver and blood disorder, the complex metabolism plays an important role in drug metabolism. Bilirubin has a yellow color, the unconjugated molecule has a peak at 450 nm. Bilirubin is sensitive to oxidation and light, serum samples should be protected from

What is the normal fate of bilirubin, and what role does the liver play? Explain how Mrs. Fender’s cirrhosis is related to her jaundice. • Bilirubin is a product of the heme of hemoglobin formed during the breakdown of erythrocytes. The liver removes the bilirubin from the blood and excretes it into the intestines as bile. When the liver is damaged, bilirubin, which is a yellow pigment, spills over into tissues and the blood, thus giving the skin a yellowish coloring.

Before the sun is up, a woman is scrambling around her house, searching for a clean dress to wear. It has not rained the last few days, so she has had to cut her shower to only three minutes and hasn’t been able to do the laundry that has started to pile up. The woman finds the proper outfit — a blue, floor-length dress and a white bonnet that she ties under her chin. She peeks out of her bedroom window, the first burst of sunlight now streaking across the black water.

ONE SNOWY NIGHT last winter, I walked into a pizzeria in Morrisville, Pennsylvania, with my right pant leg hiked up my shin. A pager-size black box was strapped to my sockless ankle, and another, somewhat larger unit dangled in a holster on my belt. Together, the two items make up a tracking device called the BI ExacuTrack AT: the former is designed to be tamper-resistant, and the latter broadcasts the wearer’s location to a monitoring company via GPS. The device is commonly associated with paroled sex offenders, who wear it so authorities can keep an eye on their movements. Thus my experiment: an online guide had specified that the restaurant I was visiting was a “family” joint.

Oxyhaemoglobin (HbO2) Absorbs visible and infrared (IR) light Differently than deoxyhaemoglobin (Hb), and appears bright red as opposed to the darker brown Hb. Absorption in the arterial blood is represented by an AC signal which is superimposed on a DC signal representing absorptions in other substances like pigmentation in tissue, venous, capillary, bone, and so forth. Cardiac-synchronized AC signal is approximately 1% of the DC level. Perfusion Index (PI) reflects the amplitude of the pulse oximeter waveform and is calculated as the pulsatile infrared signal (AC or variable component), indexed against the non-pulsatile infrared signal (DC or constant component). PI is expressed as a percentage (0.02-20%).
