The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation It all started with the couple reading a newspaper article about the suffering in the developing world. Bill Gates send the article clipping to his father, the philanthropist William H Gates, saying that there should be something done about it. This small incident lead to the genesis of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 1997, which is today the largest private foundation in the world. The foundation, based in Seattle, Washington, is controlled by its three trustees: Bill Gates, Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett. Other principal officers include Co-Chair William H. Gates, Sr. and Chief Executive Officer Susan Desmond-Hellmann. In 1997, the foundation was formed as the William H. Gates Foundation.
