The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation It all started with the couple reading a newspaper article about the suffering in the developing world. Bill Gates send the article clipping to his father, the philanthropist William H Gates, saying that there should be something done about it. This small incident lead to the genesis of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 1997, which is today the largest private foundation in the world. The foundation, based in Seattle, Washington, is controlled by its three trustees: Bill Gates, Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett. Other principal officers include Co-Chair William H. Gates, Sr. and Chief Executive Officer Susan Desmond-Hellmann. In 1997, the foundation was formed as the William H. Gates Foundation. The foundation reflects on and reviews each strategy annually, and makes adjustments to implementation plan toward achieving our goals. Within each strategy, which has an allocation of resources, the foundation collaborates with grantee and partner organizations to develop proposals that align with its strategic priorities and the organization’s focus and capabilities. The Gates Foundation uses a standard four-phase process to develop all of its grants and contracts. The duration of each phase depends on the complexity of the project as well as the capacity and geographic location of the prospective partner. Phase 1: Concept Development. The foundation’s program officers work to identify ideas that support its strategic priorities, in consultation with foundation colleagues, researchers, policymakers, and other partners in the field.
