Maya Angelou, born fourth of April 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri, was an Afro-American author, poet, dancer, singer, actress, and most importantly a civil rights activist and a feminist. Angelou was very much aware of the discrimination she faced in the society because of her race and sex. Nevertheless, she was a proud woman and that confidence showed through not only her work but in everything, she did. Angelou reached international recognition in 1969 when she posted her memoir “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings”, the first non-fiction best seller by an African-American woman. Moreover, in 1971 she published the collection “Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water ‘Fore I Die” which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.
Born Marguerite Annie Johnson in 1928, Maya Angelou had a very brutal upbringing. She encountered firsthand racial prejudice and discrimination from a very young age, as well as being taken advantage of sexually. While visiting her mother when she was seven years old, she was “raped by her mother’s boyfriend.” Angelou’s uncle murdered her mother’s boyfriend as vengeance for the crime. This was all so traumatizing for Angelou that she “spent years as a virtual mute” (“Maya Angelou”).
Maya Angelou was a strong African-American women who made an influential impact on the Civil Rights Movement, in bother her actions, and her literature. Her life experiences and courage helped others, and made her work influential. During Maya’s early life, she experienced many hardships that shaped her into the person many remember her as. Born on April 4, 1928, she only lived in St. Louis, MO for three years before her parents got divorced, and Maya, along with her mother and brother, moved in with her grandparents in Arkansas. At the age of eight, raped by her mother’s boyfriend, Maya learned the power that words possess.
Angelou’s eighth grade graduation takes place in the racially segregated town of Stamps, Arkansas. Maya Angelou was a kind hearted girl, who’s nervousness and excitement had her feeling many different emotions leading to her big day. “I had taken to smiling more often, and my jaws hurt from the unaccustomed activity.” As Angelou is showered with gifts from friends, family, and complete strangers, she feels hopeful and optimistic about her graduation.
In American history, there have been poets that have arrived on the scenes, taken the world by storm, and disappeared abruptly. Two of these poets are Maya Angelou and Langston Hughes. These poets have shared their works of art with the world, and they have not gone unnoticed. Marguerite Annie Johnson was Maya Angelou’s name at birth. She was born on April 4, 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri. Angelou started going by Maya because her little brother could not pronounce Marguerite, so he would call her “My-a sister” which later turned to Maya. Maya Angleou was the daughter of “her mother Vivian Baxter who was a nurse and part time she worked as card dealer in a casino, her father named Bailey Johnson he was a doorman at an apartment building. Then she had an older brother named Bailey Jr. that was one-years old.”
Angelou’s contribution to the Civil Rights Movement and her achievements as an activist were remarkable. While these achievements seem to be enough to last a lifetime, the Civil Rights Movement was only the beginning for Angelou. Angelou worked as an outspoken Civil Rights activist during the movement. But even after the Civil Rights Movement had ended, she continued to be a voice of humanity, speaking out against anything that harmed the human spirit. Angelou moved on to influence American society as a whole, from the 1970’s to the day she died, May 28, 2014.
Maya Angelou was born on April 4, 1928 and passed away on May 28, 2014. Throughout her lifetime, Angelou faced obstacles as an African American woman. Her first obstacle occurred when Angelou was eight year old and was raped by her mother’s boyfriend Freeman. After this experience with her mother’s boyfriend, she later on told her brother who then told the family. Freeman faced 1 day in jail for his punishment.
In similarities, the writing is a motivational and inspirational theme using Ethos, Pathos, and Logos to connect to the audience. Inspirational and motivational poems connect to the audience on another level as if the author and the reader are having a heart to heart conversation. “I’ve learned that people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” (Maya Angelou) Inspirational writing are a lifetime piece of art put into words.
