Who is the greatest Canadian in History? Tommy Clement Douglas, the Father of Medicare without doubts. One can be qualified and granted with the title ‘Greatest Canadian in History’ when Canadians be proud of the legacy one has created. An online survey conducted by Leger Marketing has shown that 94 percent of Canadians thinks that Canada’s Universal Health Care created by Tommy Douglas is the most important pride as a Canadian; even though Europe too has Universal Health Care for their citizens. Tommy’s idea of Universal Health Care is a type of health care where citizens are provided with health coverage regardless of their income, race, age, pre-existing conditions, gender, or wealth. This reason being, the Great Depression caused a crisis to Canada’s health care system. The voluntary service and care demanded, exceeded the resources available from the government. Whilst, the Great Depression made most Canadians impoverish, and could not afford the health care needed. The responsibility to solve health care problems fell to the hands of the Premier of each province, as the federal government reduced the fund of health care. Meanwhile in Saskatchewan, Tommy Douglas witnesses the Great Depression with violent and uncontrollable drought. He witness farmers suffering at first hand from drought and the low demand of wheat; unable to afford medical care for those they hold dear. In 1944, Tommy Douglas resigned from his federal seat to contest in the Saskatchewan general election; he believed that he had the responsibility to improve the lives of ordinary people. He succeeded and became the Premier Saskatchewan in July, 10 1944. It was in 1946 that he first proposed the idea of Universal Health Care. Terry Fox should be the Greatest Canadian for his contribution to raise cancer awareness and overcome disease; he influenced Canadians to help people with disability. Nobel Prize winner Sir Frederick Banting should be the Greatest Canadian for the discovery of Insulin. He found the cure for diabetes and saved the potential life of millions not only in Canada but across the world. With respect to the initiatives and efforts of Tommy Douglas and Sir Kendrick Banting. Please keep in mind Terry Fox did an excellent job to raise awareness for cancer. However, those money and treatment would not be treating people that are unemployed or be treating student. Whereas Tommy Douglas universal health care promotes equality and fairness and give all people will have equal access to health care, even prisoners has the same treatment as a normal citizens. Although Sir Kendrick Banting discovery of Insulin help cured diabetes, which was a common metabolic disease during the 1930s. Without the proposal of Universal Free Health Care citizens would not be able to afford it, Insulin would not be use as effective and useful as families could not afford to
