Three murder case studies will be presented and compare here: Marian Bates, Martha Moxley, and Elizabeth Short. Marian Bates was a 64 year old Nottingham Jeweler who was murdered in front of her husband, Victor Bates, and children. Peter Williams, a 19 year old drug addict was released early from prison and was supposedly under “intense supervision”. Williams removed his tag and violated his curfew. He and an unidentified gunman who is still at large, raided a jewelry store on September 30th 2003. The gunman later identified as James Brodie pointed a pistol at the Bates’s daughter Xanthe. Bates leaped forward to protect her and was shot in chest, while Williams bludgeoned her husband with a crow bar. In 2005, Peter Williams was convicted and …show more content…
The Black Dahlia Murder was the informal name given to her murder by the media. Her body was found on a vacant lot in Leimert Park, in suburban Los Angeles, California on January 15th, 1947. Short was 22 years old at the time of her death. Her body was found on some abandoned land in Leimert Park. Primitive forensic technology prevented the LAPD from determining the exact time of her murder. Her body was drained of majority of her blood; she had been brutally cut in half at the waist and her mouth sliced into a sinister smile. Her body was thought to have been washed to remove any evidence and she was found with her hands on her head and her legs spread open. Elizabeth Short is assumed to have bee forced to eat feces and was raped postmortem. Historians believe that the nickname “Black Dahlia” comes from the fact that Short often wore black clothing that complimented her fair skin and dark hair. More that 60 suspects were questions, however, her murder remains unsolved. Elizabeth Short’s murder is one of the most notable cold case in the history of the U.S. . The failure to catch her murderer was blamed on the sensationalization of the murder by the media. The 2nd and 3rd cases were either once or still are cold cases, probably because of the time when the murders were committed. The first murder was more obvious who the killer was, unlike the last two who have twist and
“There. We have a, there’s a note left and our daughter’s gone.” Were Patsy Ramsey's words while on the phone, reporting her six year old daughter’s disappearance to 911 at 5:52 a.m. on Christmas day in 1996. The missing six year old girl was JonBenet Ramsey. When she was found murdered, it was obvious she suffered from various injuries.
Back in 1900 Hunter Randolf, a 46 year old murder who took about 7 girls, 3 boys and 1 adult, is serving three life sentences and death row. In Fall of 1969, in a small town called Ploriska ( plow-risk-uh ) where it was very known for disappearing people, most commonly kids. 17 years later a new thirsty murder’ is on the run ready to take the place of Hunter Randolf. Thirteen-year-old jannett was out on a school night with two friends, Cassie and London who were on their way home from the movies. They seperated into three directions but they all lived in the same neighbourhood so it wasnt so unsafe to walk alone.
In the case of Tara Brown’s murder, various groups of individuals are affected. As well as maintaining principles of fair punishment and deterrence, the criminal justice system has to consider perceptions of the victim’s family (secondary victim), the community’s demand for crime prevention, and the offender’s rights to a fair court hearing. The most likely outcome is imprisonment for Lionel John Patea due to committing an indictable offence. It is important to note that if this was only a case of domestic abuse without murder, it would utilise more time, effort and expenses to come to a resolution. This is due to the different circumstances and degree of abuse that the judge has to assess.
To start, The Black dahlia murder till this very day is one of L.A’s oldest cold cases to date. On January, 15, 1947, A local resident finds a severed body of a 22 year old woman named Elizabeth Short (Newton 25). Later, Investigators found that Short had been taken and killed somewhere else, washed and drained of blood, and then discarded in a vacant lot. (Newton 35).
The most notorious cold case in Los Angeles history is the gruesome murder of Elisabeth Short. On January 15, 1947, Short’s mutilated corpse was found on the ground of a vacant lot by a local mother taking her child for a walk. As the news got word of this tragedy, there were many accused of committing this heinous crime. Although there are many suspects in Elisabeth Short’s murder, evidence suggests that George Hodel is a primary culprit. Elisabeth Short was born July 29, 1924, in Hyde Park of Boston Massachusetts.
William's first victim’s name was Josephine Ross. She got murdered on June 5, 1945, at the age of 43. Ross’ body found repeatedly stabbed with her head wrapped with a dress. The police had mentioned that she was most likely to have had an intruder beforehand and was soon to be known as the killer. In Josephine’s hand, there were dark hairs this shows that she had struggled before she was murdered.
On May 2, 1998 there was a murder and robbery at a Popeye’s Fried Chicken restaurant in Pensacola, Florida. Cynthia Harrison was an assistant manager and was scheduled to work with Timothy Hurst at eight that morning. When other workers showed up at 10:30 they found the door locked. Tonya Crenshaw, another assistant manager, found the safe unlocked and open with money missing. A delivery driver found Harrison’s dead
For the Application of the Criminal Justice System project of the Criminal Justice course, I chose the arrest of John Burke. This case is about the arrest and sentencing of John Burke who had shot and killed Joseph Ronan. Twenty-five year old John Burke agreed to meet with 22 year old Joseph Ronan at Ronans home, in Reading, Massachusetts on Monday, August 15, 2011 around 1pm, with the intent of purchasing Percocet pills. (Boston.com, 2013) However, shortly after entering Ronans home, Burke opened fire (News, 2011), and after shooting Joseph Ronan several times, with the belief that Ronan was involved in a robbery at Burkes apartment in April 2011 (Boston.com, 2013), fled the home.
In February 2014, a horrendous event occurred that shocked not only the nation, but the world. Greg Anderson murdered his 11-year-old son Luke and the police then shot him at the Tyabb cricket oval. Luke’s mother, Rosie Batty, had suffered years of family violence and believes the killing was Greg’s final act of control over her. Rosie Batty knows pain no woman should have to suffer. Since that event, Rosie has become an outspoken campaigner against domestic violence, captivating hearts and minds all over Australia with her courage, compassion and forgiveness.
Black Dahlia Murder In 1947 the tragic loss of Elizabeth Short shocked many people all over the world. This wasn’t your typical murder, this murder had to have been planned out and thought about for a while before its happening. The “Black Dahlia Murder” is the biggest unsolved case in Los Angeles and is still an undergoing investigation. I have reason to believe that Dr. Gorge Hodel is the murderer behind the brutality of Elizabeth Short’s body.
On Sunday, November 13, 1842 a double murder occurred at Smith Farm in Old Fields, Long Island. The victims, Alexander Smith and and Rebecca Smith, were a wealthy, well- respected married couple who ran Smith farm. George Weeks, the Smiths farmhand, was reporting for work the monday after the murder and heard the dog barking from the work-shed by the Smiths house. George Weeks then became suspicious since the dog was usually inside with Mr. Smith. George then looked in the house and saw that the east room window was broken and Mr. and Mrs. Smith were lying on the floor covered in blood.
Murder is one of the hardest crimes to commit and get away with due to all of the technology used today to solve crimes. The only problem with this case is that it was committed in the 1890’s. Murderers were able to easily escape during these times due to the little evidence that could be found. This caused crime and murder rates to increase rapidly. Lizzie Borden was an example of a murderer that escaped all of the charges against her.

The evidence one could observe where there is a major difference between the theory and the reality of the case is how the mode of death was discovered and how that played a role in the trial and later appeal. According to Michael D. Lyman, author of Criminal Investigation: the Art and the Science, the type of death and how the individual dies can, “be discovered through careful examination of both the deceased and the crime scene” (275). However, Foddrill’s corpse was in bad condition due to her being kept in the shed. This decomposition made it difficult for investigators to be certain how she died. For example,
"(“Jailed for murder”). She was a social worker who was 49 years old when she lost her life. The first person to discover the body was Mr. Bench who was a firefighter.
