The Black Dahlia: Finally Solved?
One of the most famous unsolved murder mysteries of Hollywood is The Black Dahlia. A young girl moves to Los Angeles dreaming of catching her big break as an actress, but is brutally murdered. In the case of the Elizabeth Short, known more commonly as the Black Dahlia, there were many suspects in wide range. This 69-year unsolved case had no strong evidence of who killed the Black Dahlia, but in recent years, new evidence has been discovered leading police to suspect that the killer was, in fact, Dr. George Hill Hodel. With this new evidence, Dr. George Hill Hodel is the leading suspect in the Black Dahlia murder. Some people believe the Black Dahlia was murdered by Mark Hansen, or another suspect, however

Her father went into debt and ran away, when she was six years old, leaving people to believe he committed suicide. When she was a sophomore she dropped out of school to pursue her dream of becoming an actress (“Black Dahlia Biography”). Later she had been arrested at age nineteen for underage drinking. She lived in several states. While living in Florida she met Major Matthew Michael Gordon, Jr., who became her fiancé. He died August 10,1945 from a plane crash, before they got married (“Black Dahlia Biography”). During the mid-1940s, Elizabeth Short was living in Los Angeles, California. She was working as a waitress, and aspired to become an actress. She was murdered in January of 1947, and became known as “The Black Dahlia”. She was known for her clothes being black and her hair being a dark brown resembling a black color. George Hill Hodel murdered the Black Dahlia. Dr. Hodel was an American physician, and had a medical background. He was known to be abusive to his wife and children. When the police started investigating the case, they put wiretaps in his house and overheard a conversation where Dr. Hodel said "Supposin' I did kill the Black Dahlia. They couldn't prove it now (“The Black Dahlia Murder”). They can't talk to my secretary because she's dead". Tamar Nais Hodel, his daughter, states the he sexually abused her, and made the artist Man Ray take nude photos of his then eleven-year old daughter (Sheila, “Uncovering the Secrets”). His other children talk about a secret room he forbid them from entering. They suspect that he was torturing and murdering women in this room. When his son Steve Hodel grew up he became a police officer and started to investigate this case. Steve used Buster, the police dog for finding human remains, to look for more evidence and found four locations on the property of George Hodel where there was human decomposition (Steve “Buster”). He was a top suspect in the case for many years, but before the police could press charges, he abandoned his family and moved to Asia. He was never caught and died before he could be tried for the murder of the Black
15 year old Hannah Spellmen was announced dead on August 14 1909 in Bridgeport. After 5 months of investigating the trial was closed because the only clue that was left was her drawing book but all the pages were blank. Hannah was known for her dark grey eyes. 87 years later it was warm spring and 15 year old Emily Martin found herself in her mom 's room looking for shoes to match her dark grey eyes only to find a musty box. The Atlanta Child Murders is an unsolved case in a way. Simply because no one was ever convicted of the murders of the young boys that were located in Atlanta over a span of two years. However, Wayne Williams was the prime suspect in the murders of the children, but was only convicted of murdering two adult men. The method of killing the young boys was by strangulation as well as the two adults. Wayne Williams was spotted on a bridge by a stake out team after a loud splash was heard in the river.

In August 1892, one of the most disastrous murderers occurred that is still yet to be solved. Andrew Jackson Borden and Abby Durfee Borden were a married couple in the 19th century. They were suddenly murdered with an ax and were given multiple whacks to the head. Lizzie Borden, daughter of the two victims, still remains as the only suspect that committed the murderers. For this reason, Lizzie Borden is guilty.

A recording was found by Dr. Hodel’s son of a conversation between Hodel and an unknown person, during which Dr. Hodel allegedly stated, "Supposin' I did kill the Black Dahlia. On the night of December 26, 1996, JonBenet Ramsey, a six-year-old beauty queen, appeared dead at the crime scene. The autopsy showed that someone strangled her to death. Also, her skull had gotten fractured, and she also appeared sexually assaulted. The ongoing investigation has multiple suspects, but none seem totally guilty. The police found JonBenet dead in her basement.

On Friday evening, the body of teenager Robert "Bob" Sheldon was found at a park in eastern Tulsa, laying next to a fountain with a knife wound in his abdomen. Further evidence suggests that the Sheldon had been intoxicated. No arrests have been made yet, but police suspect that it was a gang-related crime. On December 23, 1981, Thomas Sophonow, a Canadian man, was wrongfully accused of murder. 16 year old Barbara Stoppel was ruthlessly killed at the washroom of her workplace. Unfortunately, eyewitnesses mistakenly chose Mr. Sophonow as being the murderer. Eye witnesses stated that a man, whose appearance was very similar to that of Thomas Sophonow, locked the door and made his way to the back of the shop where he was presumed to have strangled Barbara Stoppel to death. Furthermore, while Thomas Sophonow was in custody, he showed an undercover officer a door locking technique.
Bryan Stevenson knew the perils of injustice and inequality just as well as his clients on death row.
