Black Panther Party
During the civil rights movement there were lots of inspirational figures to inspire people and help the blacks being discriminated against by regular people and sometimes by the government and by the Klu-Klux Klan. That's where the black panther party comes in. Their goal is to help the black community's try to live a normal life and not to be harassed or maybe even killed .The black panther party was a group that tried to protect the members as well as their children and also to feed them before school and give them what they needed . They also helped to stop the brutality of the police and stop racism but this is a battle that is not finished. add in the 3 topics

It was established by Stokely Carmichael in Alabama in 1964. In October 1966 Bobby Seale and Huey Newton formed the black panther party in Oakland, California they named it after the new organization after the emblem adopted by Lowndes County Freedom Organization.(spartacus). There are theories that the F.B.I. had used dirty tactics to put the Black Panther Party to rest. Apparently the F.B.I. had put black propaganda in the media to show people that the Black Panther Party was bad and were a threat to society. The FBI may of used people to forge letters and break laws so it could be blamed on the Black Panther Party. Thee message of the black panthers was violent they preached for a war but consider themselves as an African American party they will speak up for those who are being shushed by the whites they would do anything to get what they want. (history) On the 28th of October Huey Newton was wounded and while at the hospital he was charged with killing a police officer. That following year he was found guilty of voluntary manslaughte, there was a large exchange of gunfire between the Black Panther Party and police. The SDS’s main issue revolved around the Vietnam War and particularly about matters relating to war, for instance, the drafting of students. The organization essentially wanted to create a “New Left” (Document 7). The Black Panther Party originally wanted to protect African Americans from acts of police brutality. However, along with putting an end to police brutality, they soon developed into a group who also wanted the release of all African Americans from jail and compensation for exploitation by white Americans (Document 8). The United Farm Workers ultimately wanted to improve migrant farmworkers wages and working conditions (Document 9).
June 15, 2018 During a time of civil and systematic inequalities, many minorities felt the right to be treated equally. Different walks of life affected their approach on the problem. Civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King Jr and Jesse Jackson took a more peaceful direction at attaining equal rights for African Americans at the time. While others like Malcom X and Huey Newton took a more militaristic approach.
The Black panther party founded in October of 1966 by Bobby Seale and Huey Newton. The main purpose of this group was to fight white oppression after seeing many people suffer from police brutality. THey had chosen the name Black panthers because the black panther doesn’t strike first, “but if the aggressor strikes first, then he’ll attack.” the black panthers had a 10 point plan that had everything they wanted to change in society.
The Black Panther’s wanted four things for the colored community: “equality in education, housing, employment, and civil rights.” They created ten steps for the Black Panther Party to achieve these aspirations. These ten steps were supposed to help the Black communities economically. Some of the steps are freedom, full employment, decent housing, free healthcare, and ending robbery in black communities. The Black Panthers affected the civil rights movement by starting many programs for the colored community giving them a sense of equality.
The Black Panthers was an independent tank battalion of the United States Army during World War 2. The 761st was mainly consisted of African American soldier who were not allowed to serve with white soldiers. During the war Robinson got into trouble with the law for not going to the back of a bus. After the bus ride he was reported to the military police. He was charged with many offenses that he did not commit.
Was the Black Panther Party Significant? Well that's a very interesting question but in order to answer that you have to go all the way back to the beginning. In 1966 Bobby Seal and Huey Newton founded The Black Panther for self defense. Bobby Seale after his time in the Air Force decided to attend Merritt College, while he was there he joined their “Afro- American Association which was a group that promoted black voices and activist and it is their were he met Huey P Newton.
On May 2, 1967, Huey P. Newton, the minister of defense of the Black Panthers, said that “the time has come for black people to arm themselves against this terror before it is too late” (Document F). The Black Panther Party for Self Defense a complex nationalist organization that started off at a small poverty center in North Oakland with a few member and quickly expanded with chapters throughout the United States. They sought to educate the people on political matter, and they inspired black people start a revolution in order to have their voice be heard and their needs be met. Unlike Martin Luther King, they took on more violent approaches to try and fulfill their political agenda. This was a very interesting group that eventually span outside of the U.S.
They demonstrated to everyone the power of defying the police and the government to bring about change. They wanted to inspire as many black people as possible to come and fight alongside their party. For instance, “In 1966 they organized young, poor, disenfranchised African Americans into the Black Panther Party” (National Museum of African American History & Culture). More people were able to hear everything they had to say and be inspired to support their cause when their party increased in numbers. They needed as many people as they could get in order to stand up to the police.
In contrary to peaceful protest and marches led by Martin Luther King there were other leaders who had more radical approaches to protest. Amongst these radical leaders are Malcolm X, Robert Williams, and the Black Panthers. The Black Panthers, a group created by in 1966, by Huey P Newton and Bobby Seale protected black communities patrolling areas with loaded firearms, monitoring police activities involving blacks. Since they were known for carrying loaded firearms FBI Director J Edgar Hoover considered the Black Panthers “the greatest threat to the internal security of the United States” (To Determine the Destiny of Our Black Community). The Black Panthers created the Ten-Point Program.
Imagine being discriminated against just because of the skin color you were born with. In addition to promoting more power for the people of color in society these strong people were pushing for equality among everyone. Often times today the Black Power movement is misjudged or looked down upon, but if you look at what they really stood for it was not black superiority
Bobby Seale and Huey Newton decided to help each other, help everyone else. The two came together to create the Black Panthers, which would later be renamed, and called the Black Panthers Party. Bobby Seale said “You don't fight racism with racism, the best way to fight racism is with solidarity.” Seale broke away from the nonviolent civil rights movement to help create the Black Panthers in 1966. The Panthers became a new voice in the Civil Rights Movement, and they rejected the movement's nonviolent approach.
The black panthers put a lot of their dedication into police brutality since police officers used their powers against blacks on a daily. Freedom to all black men in prisons and jails because majority of the blacks put into jails had unfair trials and are innocent of their accusations. The next point is the black people to be tried with a jury of their race for the sake of equality and fairness. The last point in the ten point program is the need for land, bread, housing, education, clothing, justice and peace. The need for all of these points shows the dedication of the black panther party.
The Panthers would take anyone that would help them. Newton and Seale wanted to not just protest Black rights, but also wanted to get involved and help black families in poverty. The need for blacks to have their own so called justice against prejudice in a nation they felt were not supporting them in becoming an equal part of a world which had struggled for the rights of blacks since slavery. The Black Panther Party for Self Defense were perceived as a militant organization unlike the Ku Klux Klan. Many of those in political power felt that the panther’s organization was the next uprising for blacks following Dr. Martin Luther King and Malcolm X for civil rights. Huey Newton followed the approach of Malcom X in trying to achieve that all black were self-contained and become a working product of society.
