Blue Skin of the Sea takes place on The Big Island of Hawaii during 1953-1966. The story focuses on a boy named Sonny Mendoza who lost his mother when he was born. His father is always gone because of his job being a fisherman. Sonny stays with his Aunty Pearl and his cousin Keo which he is somewhat of a bully. The stories in this book show Sonny grow up as he has to face several different challenges.

The men hunted buffalo, and small game like ground squirrels, nuts, berries, and steamed camas roots. The ancestors of the Blackfoot Indians was living in buffalo-hide tepees. Since the Blackfeet moved frequently to follow the buffalo herd so the tepees had to be specially designed to set up and break down quickly.

Since the abolishment of slavery black women are no long being forced to alter their hair; however the underlying principle still remains as society indirectly forces black women to alter their hair in order to “fit in” as society says having straightened hair symbolizes femininity. Once again these standards exclude black women as their “kinky” hair does not fit into societal norms of feminine. The Aryan Brotherhood is a gang that was founded in San Quentin State Prison in 1967. The man who founded the gang was Barry Mills and Tyler Bingham. Barry Mills and Tyler Bingham created the gang to protect white inmates from the predatory black and Mexican inmates. They were beat on randomly by Black Guerilla Family and the Mexican Mafia for either exploitation or no reason at all. Many whites did not like the random beatings, which is how the gang began.

When I am asked “What is a Bronco?” , the answer is simple--I am a Bronco, most of my friends are Broncos, my teammates are Broncos and the student body at Blackfoot High School are Broncos. Even the simplest things like eating in the same restaurant, using the same public bathroom, schools, even using the same hospitals was highly forbidden. Blacks were treated poorly, harassed, given a lot less opportunities than whites, and even assaulted.

The “Black-Eyed Women” The short story “Black-Eyed Women” is within the book The Refugees, written by Viet Thanh Nguyen. The characters throughout the short story share similar qualities as the undead. This being said, the 38-year-old Vietnamese refugee is the narrator of the short story who works as a ghostwriter; who has lived in silence with her mother for a good amount of time. The idea of a ghost’s embodiment is proven through the ultimate struggle one may face during catastrophic periods.
