I.Rudolfo Anaya 's novel takes place in New Mexico in a small village called El Puerto. These details are true to Anaya 's life because the main protagonist is Antonio Marez, and he is modeled similarly to his life experiences. The mother comes from a family of farmers and the father comes from a family of vaqueros creating a conflict between the two and their children especially Antonio who is still in search of his own beliefs and identity. A.New Mexico or any Hispanic country has its cultural tradition but in this novel Rudolfo portrays multiple.
In this world, two sides to every story always exist; the in-group constantly battles the out-group. Prejudices arise and create conflict time after time. In Rudolfo Anaya’s Bless Me, Ultima, Antonio Marez’s life drastically changes when Ultima arrives to live with his family. The older woman harnesses magical healing powers as a curandera, but many of the townspeople see her as a bruja, a horrible witch. In their remote New Mexican village, insiders stick together and gang up against the weak and diverse, the same way strong women have faced persecution, the US government removed thousands of Japanese-Americans, and as Senator McCarthy and his followers scoured for Communists.
While he knows that his actions are immoral, he embraces it fully by calling for evil forces to help in his plans to destroy Othello’s life. This imagery shows Iago’s true nature to the audience, one that wishes for the corruption of people’s lives and actively acting it out. Moreover, Iago refers to himself as a devil in a soliloquy after Cassio drunkenly --------, saying "When devils will the blackest sins put on, / They do suggest at first with heavenly shows, / As I do now" (2.3.351-353). The Spirit of the Llano Magical realism is when magical elements or illogical scenarios appear in an otherwise realistic or normal setting. In Bless Me, Ultima there are many elements of magical realism which occur in the sacred town Tony Marez spends his childhood in. Tony is the character Rudolfo Anaya uses to share personal experience he had as a child. From start to finish, the story consistently portrays imagery and personification to give the land of New Mexico a life of its own. Tony describes his magical experience when he first meets Ultima as “her eyes swept the surrounding hills and through them he saw for the first time the wild beauty of their hills and the magic of the green river.
Closing statement: At the end of the novel, Rudolfo Anaya describes that the goodness of a person is based solely on their actions. Although Ultima has done bad, the amount of good she has done in her lifetime overpowers that, unlike Tenorio who only possesses bad. It has been made clear that distinguishing the line between good and evil is not a clean cut. This promotes Antonio’s growth and maturity, and is one of Antonio’s most valuable lesson in
First of all, Anaya used juxtaposition while Uncle Lucas was cursed to demonstrate the absence of God’s power and the presence of Ultima’s powers in times of need; therefore, causing Antonio to question the religion he was born with. Specifically, when "the holy priest at El Puerto had been asked to exorcise el encanto, the curse, and he had failed" after Uncle Lucas got cursed by brujas in the forest (Anaya 84). Uncle Lucas was on his deathbed, dying from the curse inflicted on him for interrupting the brujas ' dance for el Diablo. He attempted to defend God by punishing the sinful, non-Christian actions of the brujas. However, when the Christian priest attempted to heal Uncle Lucas, he did not have the ability.

Always have the strength to live. Love life, and if despair enters your heart, look for me in the evening when the wind is gentle and the owls sing in the hills. I shall be with you--” (ch. pg. ). Ultima says to Antonio that he must develop his own value system and to define his own identity.
Antonio begged God to forgive Andrew (Antonio’s brother) “Your brother has sinned with the whores, and so I condemn him to hell for eternity!”(Pg.173). I have sinned, I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word, and deed.
“Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom,” is a quote by Aristotle, providing a vivid understanding that if someone knows who they are as a person, it is difficult to persuade them into thinking otherwise. However, if one is ignorant of their identity, it is easy to provide them with conflicting thoughts as well as confusion toward their culture, customs, race or anything particularly having to do with their background. In Bless Me, Ultima, the author exhibits the most frequently used cultural conflict from the Chicano culture in rural Mexico in the 1940s and purposely clashes it with Catholicism and the English Language. The book introduces Antonio who can be described as a young boy who is prone to moral questioning, in search for
Evidently Antonio’s wish was to have Prospero and his daughter killed however they were saved by Gonzalo a trustful councilor who set them up for a prosperous life on the island. It becomes clear that the violence in this play caused by Prospero was brought upon him and is therefore influenced by his brother’s treatment towards him, again we see that the need for power overpowers the love between the two brothers and later leads to a series of psychological torture for other
