Obesity is most likely the most commonly known health problem that is associated with fast food. One of the ingredients to obesity is the unhealthy ingredients. Most of the items that a customer can buy at a fast food restaurant include amounts of sugar, fats, and carbohydrates. They contain less of the things that our bodies need, ingredients such as minerals and vitamins. These large amounts of unhealthy ingredients lead to weight gain. According to Wake Forest University of Medicine, when eating trans fats such as partially hydrogenated vegetable oil can accelerate weight. It’s not just the unhealthy ingredients that lead to obesity, the large portions play a large factor in your weight. Even though the meal might seem larger a customer will most likely eat as much as they could, disregarding the fact that they might be full. For instance, one might have half a burger left which is all of the calories that the customer would need, but instead the customer might finish the burger. The customer would double their calorie intake and would consume extra unhealthy ingredients. Eating larger portions just makes it worse, as the customer is just consuming more and more of sugars, carbs, and fats. In fact, some of the current fast food chains are rolling out large portion deals where the let customers buy more food for less money. Hardee’s, Burger King and Wendy's all have kicked off new deals that include 1,000-calorie-plus sandwiches packed with 12 ounces of beef. That amount of meat in that meal is equivalent to the amount that adults are recommended to have in two days. In addition, Hardee's just introduced the Country Breakfast Burrito. This is a tortilla wrap filled with two egg omelettes, sausage, bacon, ham, cheddar cheese, hash browns and gravy. The stuffed meal contains 920 calories and 60 grams of fat. A correlation can be made that there is a fast food restaurant on every corner and the vigorous ads and commercials that are displayed on billboards, televisions, radio and cell phones teasing the audience to go out and buy this new burger instead of them staying home and eating something that would actually be beneficial to their health. Americans are not safe from the alluring temptation of fast food. In the video documentary “supersize me” Morgan Spurlock admitted that his body had cravings after 3 days of eating McDonalds non stop.
“As a culture, we no longer discuss healthy eating without also discussing unhealthy weights…eating too much-often without any parallel warnings against eating too little…overeating constitutes ‘the greatest threat’ to our survival” (Maxfield 444). The main point in both of these articles that both authors agree with is the fact that people don’t add up all their calories they eat daily, which should be less than or equal to 3500 calories. When you go to a fast food restaurant, usually a normal “healthy” person would get a salad, large drink, and a side item like fries; this normally doesn’t seem like a lot of calories, but then you add the dressing and this healthy lunch turns out becoming an unhealthy 1700 calories already in one meal. Not only is fast food a lot of calories, but it is really cheap too, and most people spend their money on this instead of eating healthy and spending more money. “Americans spend less than 10 percent of their income on food; they also spend less than a half hour a day preparing meals and little more than an hour enjoying them” (Pollan 439).
According to recent polls, approximately 3% of Americans admit to consuming fast-food at least once per day. This number, although it may appear small, it accounts for 9.5 million citizens across the United States who are unashamed of chowing down on a quick meal. In the article, “Don’t Blame the Eater,” David Zinczenko argues it is the fast food industry’s fault for the nation 's growing obesity epidemic. Furthermore, he believes people should not be blamed for their own obesity. Zinczenko argues fast-food is much more available to the fast paced lifestyle people live in rather than consuming healthy alternatives. He also discusses the fact so many people are on a low budget, it is then best and more inexpensive for them to consume fast-food. Zinczenko states a claim that the fast-food industry “would do well to protect themselves, and their customers, by providing the nutrition information people need” (Zinczenko 464).
This is why it’s bad to start healthier lunches in schools. It would be a bad idea to start healthier lunches, because students would start eating even unhealthier lunches or not eat at all. When my school went to healthier lunches I started to get bigger because the schools food was nasty so I brought a lot of candy and junk food for lunch. I also knew a few people that didn’t eat and wouldn’t eat all day until they got home. I think school lunches should be normal and if people choose to eat healthier they can bring healthier food instead of forcing the kids to eat healthy.

The process is used to make an oil more solid; provide longer shelf-life in baked products; provide longer fry-life for cooking oils.” This process changes the chemical structure of for example vegetable oils forming it into a bad oil not healthy to be consumed. Shown through figure 1 is how applying the hydrogenation process to food changes the chemical structure of the food which applies the trans fats.
