Benefits of Working with Red and Blue Personality Styles
Leading others can often be challenging, especially when two people present very diverse personality styles. In addition, not all situations should warrant the same type of response from leaders. This paper explores the characteristics of Red and Blue personality categories using the
DISC Model and Hartman Personality Profile, along with benefits and overcoming limitations of the Red-Blue working relationship. Taking the time to learn your own personality style and the style of others can improve your leadership abilities from both a personal satisfaction and productivity standpoint.

Benefits of the Red-Blue Working Relationship
There are several areas where Reds and Blues, although described as being uncomplimentary opposites, share traits that benefit the leadership environment and balance the needs and wants of both personality types. Both behavior styles are fast-paced and like to solve problems (DISC, 2012, p. 20). Although the motivation is ultimately different for a Red individual than it is for a Blue, the goal is often the same for both. Reds and Blues do feel accomplished when they reach mission completion (DISC, 2012, p. 23).
These two highly complex personality types can be controlling of others, manipulative, confrontational, possessive, and demanding. Despite these descriptors, Reds and Blues also share the traits of being extremely responsible, desire to achieve goals, strong commitment to others, and the ability to be great leaders (Hartman, 1998, p. 154-156). Reds and Blues are reliable managers; working together on a project can result in a better end product.
