Body Armor During WWI World War One was one of the biggest wars in history. So many young men lost their lives throughout the war. Some say that the more frequent use of body armor throughout the war would have saved hundreds of thousands of men. Though useful and heavy body armor was not widely used, there are multiple instances of troops on both sides using heavy body armor. Helmets were a very important part of a soldier’s uniform. Helmets created during World War One were created to protect the most important organ in the body, from stray or glancing blows from bullets and from falling debris. It took a whole year after the war had started for the British army to standardly issue steel helmets. The British and US helmets were shaped like deep saucers. Even though the British helmet did somewhat protect the soldiers from danger, the design was far from perfect. During the beginning of World War One, the Germans were using the standard issue Pickelhaube helmet. The Pickelhaube is one of the most notable and famous of the helmets used in World War One because of the spike that was protruding out of the top of the helmet. These were the types of helmets that Remarque had written about in the book “All Quiet on the Western Front.” This leather helmet …show more content…
The Stahlhelm also made an appearance near the end of “All Quiet on the Western Front” because the Germans hadn’t introduced the helmet until later in the war. The new and improved steel helmet is regarded by many historians (for example, Chris Kempshall) as being the superior helmet throughout the whole World War. This is because it offered more protection for the soldier’s lower head region and even the shoulders. This helmet became so synonymous with the German army that even the allied nations didn’t want to create a similar design because they believed it would lead to confusion in the
Uniforms played an important role in convenience, identification, and protection to the troops. Most soldiers were only given an old carpet piece for baggage, muddy discarded shoes, and dirty, ragged clothing. By wearing uniforms, it helped both sides distinguish who were Northern Union soldiers and those who were Southern Confederate soldiers. The United States’ massive industry capacity provided the ability to give all of their troops wool uniforms. Uniforms were convenient for the troops on both sides because many soldiers wore whatever they brought with them from home.
Color Guard would be protected by soldiers with sabres or rifles. Fallen Soldiers Battle Cross would be another tradition the military has, it’s a maker appropriate to the soldier’s religion, or were for the soldier who has been killed. It deals with the riffle of the soldier placed in the soldier boots or stuck in the ground with their helmet on top.
But when, because of negligence and laziness, parade ground drills were abandoned, the customary armor began to seem heavy since the soldiers rarely ever wore it. Therefore, they first asked the emperor to set aside the breastplates I chose the military mismanagement for my second reason because the soldiers didn't do what they were supposed to do which was training with their armor on but they weren't comfortable wearing it because it was too "heavy" for them so they asked the emperor at the time if they could train with it off and the emperor said yes so they did train without it on but when war came and they had to put on their helmets and breastplates it was too heavy for them so they tried to battle without the armor on with only a sword which isn't very good because you're risking your life because you don't wanna wear your
The cushion material inside the helmet is unknown ,but is often thought to be thick leather or sheep skin to soak up sweat and prevent rusting. During WWI many improvements were needed to protect the soldiers from bullets and explosives, similar to the upgrades in football equipment needed to prevent head injuries. At the beginning of WWI the Germans wore no helmet, a leather tunic, leather pants, and leather boots. Football players in the late 1800s wore a leather cap, leather shoulder pads, leather football pants, and leather cleats. Due to the advance in technology, there was a need for improvement in headware to protect the soldiers and players. Injuries and fatalities became more noticeable and so they new it was time to upgrade their equipment.
Decent uniforms were a must during the trench warfare because the battle site was filthy. The ditches where the men often fought were flooded with murky water and had dead corpses. There were also rats that roamed the trenches feeding off of the injured and fallen men. The remaining soldiers often went without food and sleep for long periods of time, which made their bodies weak and susceptible to infection. These horrendous combat conditions increased disease and medical attention needed for the
For the vast majority of the empire’s existence, Roman soldiers wore helmets and breastplates as armor and practiced military drills. Then, in 400 C.E., the Roman military felt there wasn’t a need for drills anymore. “But when, because of negligence and laziness, parade ground drills were abandoned, the customary armor began to seem heavy since the soldiers rarely ever wore it. ”(Document B). The weapons, while advanced, did NOT kill people quickly, some people even using shovels, clubs, and even serrated knives, causing wounds harder to heal than normal. The medics used very uncivilized tactics such as amputation, leeches, or unnecissary blood withdrawl causing death in the patient. The environment was another awful thing in the war: Muddy trenches filled with corpses and men missing limbs screaming for help. There were also hot deserts, cold snowy tundras, forests, and towns. World War 1 was supposed to end everything.
