Bones begin as cartilage, and it becomes organised into a skeleton in the mother’s womb. After birth the skeleton begins to harden; this process is known as ossification. The osteoblasts, which are the bone-forming cells, produce bone tissues, otherwise known as osteoid tissue; the osteoblasts also secrete an enzyme called phosphatase, which allows calcium salts to be deposited in the formed bone tissue early on in the process, which in turn allows the bone to harden. Canaliculi is a system of tiny canals which connects the osteoblasts and brings them tissue fluid; these canals and special cells form the frame of the bone by making a network; the bone tissue that is produced is laid down into the mould and hardens with time.
