One personally important film to me would have to be The Book of life because of its heartwarming story and ethnic background. I have always been fascinated by legends and myths of Mexican folklore for its eye-popping bright colors and history. The movie is inspired by Dia De Los Muertos or Day of the dead; a Mexican holiday that is very well known in the U.S. Day of the dead is basically a day of remembrance for loved ones who have passed and are celebrated every year on November1st-2nd. The film begins with a tour guide in a museum taking some children to a restricted area. There she shows them this book, The Book of Life. The guide reads to them the story that she expects will change the behavior of the school children. Xibalba picks Joaquin and La Muerte picks Manolo. The winner will be allowed to rule over the Land of the Remembered. Soon after the bet was made Maria gets sent off to a private boarding school in Spain, leaving Manolo and Joaquin back in Mexico to continue living their lives: Manolo strives to be a musician, but his father will not let him since he needs to carry on the family tradition of bullfighting and Joaquin lives his life as a “hero”. After years of being away, Maria comes back to visit her hometown. Manolo and Joaquin compete with each other to see who wins Maria’s hand. Xibalba, being the bad guy he is, cheats and kills off Manolo. The only reason Manolo agreed to be killed was because he thought Maria was killed by his fault. When he reached the land of the remembered Manolo realized that Maria was in fact not dead but put in a deep sleep. This meant Joaquin was free to marry Maria.
