Lois Lowry, one of the most beloved writers of children and adolescents, addresses a variety of topics such as adoption, holocaust, mental illness, cancer, and future society, giving readers a lively experience of life, I have earned the Newbury Prize in 1990 for "Counting the Stars," a reminder of the dignity and value of human beings, He has also won the Newbury Prize for "The Giver," which pivots and questions the reader about future society. As I was reading the book, I was still impressed by the calmness and the faintness of the book. I think Hope exists even in terrible situations. It’s a theme of ‘Number the stars’. Annemarie is so brave. It is much easier to be brave if you do not know everything. Her Uncle Henrik said to Annemarie like this: “That’s all that brave means-not thinking about the dangers. Just thinking about what you must do. Of course you were frightened. I was too, today. But you kept your mind on what you had to do. So did I.” I remembered the story ‘the Diary of Anne Frank’ as I am reading ‘Number the stars’. Frank's family, who lived in Amsterdam under German occupation in 1940, escaped the persecution of the Nazis and moved to a hideout behind his father's office. The diary was written while Anne lived with her parents, sister, and other four family members in a shelter with the Jews (June 1942 - August 1944). I found the process of growing the mind of the adolescent girl, the devastating criticism of the adult world, and the courage that stood firmly and unbroken in the midst of the plight.
