Ironically, the color yellow symbolizes happiness. In addition, the memoir mentions that Black Beauty was Jeanette's favorite book. The book Black Beauty is a coming of age story for the main characters Joe, John, and James. Jeannette Wall’s memoir shows the coming of age and transformation of her and her siblings, Lori, Brian, and Maureen. Just like The Glass Castle, Black Beauty shows the
Rebecca Skloot stands before the rickety old cabin, pressed against her parked car, fearfully hiding from the looming, antique cottage, afraid of what is to come. She lies in the middle of Turner Station, an ancient, eerie, ghost of a town where the Lacks family grew up on a bustling tobacco farm. The house was the childhood home of Henrietta Lacks, the late cervical cancer patient whose cells became the first ever to continue to reproduce and thrive outside of the body. This crumbling, wooden cabin is home to many memories and long-lasting history that is going to lead Rebecca to learning who is behind the HeLa cells and how important she is- to her vast family of cousins, grandparents and siblings, and to the world and future of biology for
Rebecca Skloot was first introduced to Henrietta’s cells and her story when her instructor in her Biology spoke of it. Sloot automatically became interested in the story and wanted to dedicate most of her work on Henrietta. Sloot created the interest of learning more of Henrietta’s story by introducing how her interest in the story began. Getting her point of view on the whole story made me interested as well. Reading about how passionate she is toward Henrietta made me excited to read the book.
A few cowboys try catching the horse with no success. But then he sees this cowboy step up and tries next and realizes that he is different from everyone else there. This man is wearing nice clothing and even though it shows signs of work and travel it still looks nice on the man. The man then catches the horse with little trouble. When the narrator gets off the train he again sees the man talking with another well-dressed man.
When I first picked up this book, I knew nothing about the contents I was about to read. I had no idea that there could be such emotion, and anger, and tears, and hatred all towards science. I never knew people could be manipulated so much, and I never knew there could be such miracles, such as Henrietta Lacks herself. The quote above is what really captured my attention and what drew me into the book. I never knew I could learn so much and feel so much all while reading one short book.
In the Novel Behind The Beautiful Forevers, by Katherine Boo The people of Annawadi live in a third world country where they are constantly having to face obstacles such as getting a job to pay for food to feed their families, trying to stay alive, and trying to avoid the corruptness of the police force. Reading this book has made me see that me and many other people take the things we have for granted. We worry about who has the nicest cars, Nice clothes or the biggest house. While others are worrying about their next meal or finding where to live. Annawadi also causes some of the people to all act selfish only looking for themselves to escape or others to be jealous of others and try to take them down, but this is not a third world problem because some people in first world countries tend to do this too if not more

In the poem “ What it is like to be a black girl”, Patrica Smith uses metaphorical language to show us how young black girls are being judge in society based on stereotypes . It’s describing how she wants to change and become like other people in the racial society because she’s having a hard time accepting who she is. In the beginning of “What it’s like to be a black girl” it gives you a view of a young black girl who doesn’t feel accepted in society. It emphasis the fact that many young black girls want the world to accept them for who they are.
“I felt rather proud to carry my master, and as he continued to ride me a little every day I soon became accustomed to it.” This shows that the horse is proud and that she overcame her problem. This passage is different from “The Georges and the Jewels” because in this passage the first person perspective shows how the main character overcomes her problem, rather than the other passage where she did not overcome her
