Grace Vacval Mr. Diitmar American History Book Report December 18 2014 The book, Remembrance, written by Theresa Breslin, took place at a small village in Scotland in the summer of 1915. The Great War covered three continents and lasted for a total of four years. A total of 147,609 Scots lost their lives in this 4-year-long conflict. Working men had to leave their friends and family behind so that they can head off to the front. In France, Scots ended up encountering the horrors of trench warfare, the threat of disease, and the risk of death caused by the Generals. He soon discovers that he has to become a young soldier and go off to fight in the War as well. He believes that he should not get involved in the war since the sound and sight of war frightens him. Francis is always carrying a sketchbook and pencil in his hand throughout certain parts of the book since he loves to draw and sketch pictures. John Malcolm's older sister, Maggie, becomes attached to Francis as he goes off to fight in the war. Maggies other younger brother is Alex. He, as well, ends up having to fight in the war. In the book, a law was made that all men ranging in a certain age group had to enlist in the war. This majorly changes the lives of these five individuals. At the beginning of the story, these two families become very close to each other in many ways. They plan a picnic on the beach, just the children, and this draws them very close to eachother. Maggie and John Malcolm are twins. John and Charlotte start to have interest in each other after the day at the picnic. Maggie becomes jealous of this due to the fact that John is her twin brother and they are very close as well. This includes Alex Malcolm, John Malcolm, and Francis Armstrong-Barnes. This puts a toll on Charlotte. It was very hard for her to be aware that John will be risking his life while in the war, but at the same time, she knows he is doing it for the right thing. While the boys go off to war in France, Charlotte and Maggie decide to go to France as well to work at a huge hospital there. More nurses are highly needed there so Charlotte wants to go there to help and treat the soldiers. She has her nursing certificate to take with her, but the only problem is that she is too young so she comes up with a devious plan to print over her birth date. 4365 Policy Book Report on Five Days at Memorial The book Five Days at Memorial, written by Sheri Fink illustrates the catastrophic impact of hurricane Katrina and its unprepared poor choices made by doctors who injected patients that ended their life, and the petrify stories of individuals that took place in New Orleans in August of 2005. After a couple of months in 2005 Memorial Center was under investigation for an estimate of two thousand patients that were in danger and other patients who died because of the horrific storm that struck that night. This connects to the theme by showing age can have an impact on somebody. As I kept reading, in the middle of the book RIchard Perry and his other soldier and friends who were older, began to get injured and killed in action from the war. Another quote from the book shows that Richard was happy that he hasn’t severly injured anyone or killed anyone else, “I’m not a killer,” I said. He looked at me and smiled. I hated him saying that.

The majority of people during the American Revolution fought for liberty without realizing the actual cost and brutal reality of war. In the novel My Brother Sam is Dead, the Meeker family consisting of a Father name Life, a Mother named Susannah, a rebellious teen named Sam, and a conflicted teen named Tim, journey through the life of colonists owning a tavern during the Revolutionary War. Sam departs from his family to fight alongside the Patriots going against his Father, a Tory. War brings a lot of terrible things, but some examples are families splitting, clash of generation, and an overall theme of principle vs reality. The soldiers who fought in the war thought they were fighting for liberty, when really they caused havoc and awfulness.
Wendy Warren is a professor who works in the field of the history of colonization in the Americas. She speaks in a segment called, Forgotten History: How The New England Colonists Embraced The Slave Trade in the Fresh air podcast called, Warren and Terry Gross, the host, go back and forth answering questions about the information that Warren wrote about. Warren starts the podcast by sharing a passage that man wrote about how a white man raped a black slave women and got her pregnant in order to make more slaves for himself. In the podcast the professor, Wendy Warren, interprets the many speculations against the reality of slaves during this time.

When she first comes over she is a very innocent girl, but at the end of the chapter she is violent and addicted to war. The books that are being compared and contrasted are both about The Civil War and what these soldiers went through. Each book has a few differences that separate them. The books are based on the same time period so they are going to have a lot in common. The books describe what both characters had to go through during the war. The differences in the book will show you how each soldier went through the war differently and the similarity’s will show you how it was for most of the soldiers in the Civil War.
In the story, “A Place Where the Sea Remembers” by Sandra Benitez, every character faces major difficulties of some sort. From Marta being raped to Don Justo’s daughter dying, there are twists and turns around every corner. A topic the author brushes upon is education and where it lies in society. By getting an education, anyone can acquire more wealth and can be useful in day to day life. “A boy’s education is very important” (Benitez 73).

Present throughout the book is the theme of disillusionment. In the school, they’ve been told by their schoolmasters and parents that unless they join the war, they would remain cowards. They see propaganda after propaganda, all alluding towards the glory of battle and warfare. Out on the front, they realize that nothing was further from the truth. Their dreams of being heroes shattered, like when they compare themselves to the soldier on a poster in chapter 7.

By legacy, she does not mean this in tangible items, monetary form, or an insurance policy. She discusses the immaterial legacy that is shaped by our actions on how we live our lives each day.
