One thing true about any industry that is more than 100 years old and has had pretty much the same incumbents at the top of the value chain, e.g. Oil & gas ( the 7 sisters), banking (Goldman, JPM, Citi) or for that matter management consulting (McKinsey , Bain, BCG), is that it thrives on 2 qualities – opacity and agility.
Opacity in the processes and on the information arbitrage generated over the years and agility in adapting to any new trend in the industry due to easy access to surplus cash hordes or credit relationships built over the years.

Traditionally there have been two clear distinctions in the types of consulting business models:
• Solution Shops: These firms are structured to diagnose and solve problems whose scope is undefined; they deliver value banking upon the partner’s experience and the consultant’s judgment based on historical work for similar clients and assumptions about the future. Clients pay high prices for this expertise. McKinsey , Bain , BCG and Booz & Company are examples of such firms.
• Process Evangelists: These firms are structured to address problems of defined scope with standard processes, customers pay for output only which may be in the form of actionable insights or process implementation. Salesforce, Marakon, PWC, Accenture are examples of such
