According to the DSM-5, antisocial personality disorder is “a lack of anxiety or fear and by a bold interpersonal style that may mask maladaptive behaviors.” (DIAGNOSTIC AND (5TH ED)2013) Furthermore, Major depressive disorder is described as a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest…it affects how you feel, thinks, and behave and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. (Depression (Major Depressive Disorder) - Symptoms and Causes - Mayo Clinic, 2022). Antisocial personality disorder can develop in childhood around the age of 8. The abuse of the family dog was a significant factor that led to this diagnosis. The family dog was severely abused on multiple occasions by Brandon. Brandon's mother and sisters had no idea this was going on until physical markings were found on the dog. These markings include cuts from garden shears, chunks of fur missing due to Brandon dragging the dog around, as well as teeth missing due to Brandon hitting the dog in the face with a brick. When asked why he hurt the dog so much, Brandpn stated that he liked the power dynamic he had over the dog and felt like the dog needed to be punished for any minor mistake. Circling back, Brandon also had a history of stealing money from his sisters and mother and lying when confronted about

Eric would hide his true self from everyone. No one knew Eric was a psychopath, not even his parents. Eric created pipe bombs in his bedroom and stored them in his bedroom. The typical parent would come into their teen’s room occasionally to check on them. “Eric and Dylan had planned to be dead shortly after the weekend, but Friday night they had a little work to do: one last shift at Blackjack” ( Cullen 393.)
In his past, Cole was beaten by his abusive father and neglected by his mother. The adversity in his past contributes

Theo and the rest of the Barbour family are aware that Mr. Barbour uses many substances and medications to keep him pleased and to keep his bipolar disorder at bay ☺ (Metaphor). The Barbour family would rather neglect the problems that he has and the new ones he creates. Tartt shows all different sides of Mr. Barbour’s struggle; however, the “good” days seem less prevalent than the “bad” days. Arguably the most frequent topic that the author talks about is love, in all forms. Theo in his time of need learns to love his mother in a different way, through her memories, and also develops a love for his new friends that become his family.
To other people things seemed perfect. Things weren't so “perfect” as you step foot into the McCandless household. There was lots of violence going on and although they didn’t have the hardest childhood, they had a roof over their heads, food to eat, school, things that when on when they were younger impacted Chris and the rest of his life. His dad would sometimes hit and choke his mother, often belting the kids and often assaulting them. Chris’s dad kept many secrets from Chris and his younger sister Carine.
Than there’s Cole’s father, he aggressive and cruel because he beats his son and denies the aggression to anyone that assumes anything. You can’t really put all the blame on Cole’s father for beating him because that’s all he knows because his Cole’s father's, father beat him when he grew up so because that's what his childhood was like, he’s making Cole’s childhood the same thing as his, it’s like a chain reaction. Also both of Cole’s parents have a bad drinking problem. For example when Cole in in the Circle, his father is talking about how much he cares about Cole and how much time he devotes to him but then Cole speaks out and states, “You drink until you can’t stand up, and you’re gone all the time. A devoted parent doesn't whip his kid until his shirt can’t hide all the bruises!”

Genetics can also play a big part of it. If there is someone in the line of generations before that has had antisocial personality disorder the offspring will have a chance to get it as well (Mayo Clinic, April 12, 2013). “Pregnant mothers who smoke are giving their child a high risk to develop antisocial personality disorder” (Donald Black, 2013). Saying so antisocial personality disorders are caused in the womb or start in childhood and continues as you age. Many times children have a way of manipulating people that don’t know much about anti-social personality disorders and do just enough with their charm to fuel
