Brick streets have been around for at least a century. Many people are not aware of the history that lies under the asphalt streets they tread on. Brick roads are seen less because asphalt is more common due to convenience. Drivers generally do not know the benefits of brick roads. For this reason, I propose that more brick roads be recovered and maintained rather than being covered by asphalt. By doing this people can become more aware of the benefits that brick streets can offer. Brick roads have many benefits that asphalt roads do not. Speed limits are slower and roads are quieter as well. Also in residential areas, brick roads “…add more character to the neighborhood.” On a rainy day brick roads are a better option because they flush water out rather than have it linger on the surface. Brick surfaces bring less traffic due to the fact that some people try avoid them all together because of rough riding. They require less maintenance than asphalt roads, though they do cost more money to repair. They have a longer life span and do not deteriorate as easily. At first I believed that they made it hard to handle my car due to the rough surface. I did not mind the speed limit though. After driving often on the brick streets I learned to love them. They fit the historical feel of the surrounding houses and buildings then it got me to think about how life was when the roads were first constructed. Where I used to live brick roads were none existent. I had never really thought of brick roads as anything more than a different way to make streets. I now believe brick streets are more covenant than asphalt streets due to less pot holes. I hope to influence people through my experience.
