People look at the world in different ways. There are people who will look at all the beauty, whilst other might only see darkness in the world that they live in. To understand how another person sees the world is not easily comprehended, since it is different from your own point of view, however, at the same time it is something that we all yearn for. To be a fly on the wall, and see how people truly think and feel. In the short story, “Sorry for the Loss”, written by Bridget Keehan in 2008, the reader follows a woman who works for a prison chapel and must tell one of the inmates that his grandmother has passed away. In the story the reader is able to see how the protagonist sees the world and the people around her. In the short story, “Sorry for the Loss”, the story is told by a third person narrator, …show more content…
One of the noticeable contrasts is the contrast between prisoners and world outside of the prison. The prisoners are stuck within the four walls of the prison, and have no freedom to do as they please or eat what they want, whilst they can see people living freely outside. It says in the story, “The envious eyes watching from above…” which implicates the contrast between the prisoners and the office workers on the street, since the office workers get to leave every day, while the prisoners are not able to do so. The prisoners see the office workers as free men, who have jobs and lives, while the prisoners do not serve any real purpose, since they are trapped inside a prison. As it says in the story, “Some of the prisoners pelt up the stairs to the ‘fives’, to gather around the large arch window and wave to their departing families and friends.” This shows the true contrast between the inmates and the office workers, since the office workers can be with their loved ones at all times, while the inmates are forced to be apart from their loved
The Yuma Territorial Prison opened in 1875, but the first prisoners were not moved to the prison, in till 1876. Over three thousand prisoners sentences were served during the thirty three years the prison was operational. Yuma Territorial Prison was perceived throughout its many different roles as a luxury for the community of Yuma, Arizona. The community of Yuma,Arizona might think this because of the many benefits the prison gave the inmates and the town people .The prison also played many different roles other than just being a prison.
Told in the third person limited, the short story explores
The family shows signs of being part of either a low or poor class based off the conditions of the household they are living in and the bareness of their apartment. For instance, the dining room is extremely small and the kitchen seems old and worn out. Correspondingly, the family members seem to lack personality due to to the simple clothing they are wearing. However, the bright colors found interior of the home create a contrast between the dreary environment of the household. This helps convey the message that although the family may not be as economically stable and live a dull life, they still happily interact among one another and come together every evening to have a meal together.
What is the writer’s message or purpose in writing this article? To have the privilege of being able to see, you always wonder how life is to someone that can’t. Life revolves a lot in knowing what you can see, hear, taste, smell, and touch. These are some things we take for granted, sometimes you really have to sit yourself down and acknowledge how lucky you are. But in an imperfect world, some people aren’t as lucky and you have to be willing to listen and learn about what other people go through.
As the narrator is stuck between the two worlds, she describes the church to be dark and dingy and the plaza as bright and modern. Her descriptions of the cultural environment showcase her internal struggle between the two worlds, as she tries to find a balance between the
The short story “Identities” by W. D. Valgardson, tells the story of an up-class man being wrongly stereotyped resulting in his untimely death. The effective use of contrast in this story helps readers to understand the protagonist. Contrast is the strategy in which the writer describes the difference between two or more neighbourhoods, characters, or perceptions. Contrast is initially displayed in Valgardson’s detailed description of the protagonist's neighbourhood and the poorer side of town. The character's community is expressed as innocent, honest and spotless.
Generally speaking, there are not many places that contrast as a jail and a church do. In the book, A Lesson Before Dying, the church and the jail could not contrast more. That is mainly because Grant, the main character and narrator, spends most of his time going back and forth between the two. It is almost as if he lives in two different worlds. Anyhow, the contrast between the church and the jail helps to show the way Grant, as well as his relationship with Jefferson, evolves throughout the story.
In prisons, days are often idle, and the inmates’ lives seem to serve no real purpose. Growing up, many families had chores

The Short Story The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin explores the emotions of Louise Mallard a woman with a heart disease. In the hour that the story is told, it ranges from showing Mrs. Mallard different reactions to learning of her husbands death to him surprisingly showing up alive and eventually her untimely death from a heart disease. Although only a brief period of time is shown, many emotions are revealed through the third person omniscient point of view. This point of view shows more than just the protagonists thoughts and is not limited to one person. It allows the readers to know something about Mrs. Mallard that she does not as the story ends after Mrs. Mallard has already died.
The attitudes to grief over the loss of a loved one are presented in two thoroughly different ways in the two poems of ‘Funeral Blues’ and ‘Remember’. Some differences include the tone towards death as ‘Funeral Blues’ was written with a more mocking, sarcastic tone towards death and grieving the loss of a loved one, (even though it was later interpreted as a genuine expression of grief after the movie “Four Weddings and a Funeral” in 1994), whereas ‘Remember’ has a more sincere and heartfelt tone towards death. In addition, ‘Funeral Blues’ is entirely negative towards death not only forbidding themselves from moving on but also forbidding the world from moving on after the tragic passing of the loved one, whilst ‘Remember’ gives the griever
I have never before visited a prison nor have I met a prisoner in my entire life. Why should I care about someone whom I would rarely see? But these inmates are our brothers and sisters who may have made bad choices, but don’t want their mistakes to hold them back. Throughout my life, my once miserable and hopeless circumstances were transformed by education, and I am certain that the same principle can be applied to anyone, including inmates, despite our differences in how we responded to circumstances. It is true that prison takes nearly everything away from them – even their hopes and dreams.
This shows a balance between gender roles, as well as the embracing progressive changes within culture and society. In the story “The Story of an Hour,” by Kate Chopin, a third-person omniscient narrator, relates how Mrs. Louise Mallard, the protagonist, experiences the euphoria of freedom rather than the grief of loneliness after hearing about her husband’s death. Later, when Mrs. Mallard discovers that her husband, Mr. Brently Mallard, still lives, she realizes that all her aspiration for freedom has gone. The shock and disappointment kills Mrs. Mallard.
After working with these men for months, you begin to look past the societal mask they are forced to wear due to their past mistakes, and begin to see them as real genuine people. [Thesis and Preview] Life after prison affects all realms of a community.
