Rudy’s perception on himself changed over the course of the book because when he was talking about when he was young that he wanted to be a diesel mechanic. His perception changed because as he got older, he wanted to become a doctor. The reason he wanted to become a doctor was because people doubted him and said he couldn 't become one so he wanted to prove them wrong.
