The story of Calico Joe all began when he was called up from an AA team from Midland, Texas. The first pitch thrown to him he smashed over the wall, his first of many major league home runs. As his rookie season went on, he shattered many records such as: 15 consecutive hits, three home runs in three at bats, highest batting average ever for 38 games, and at least one hit 19 games in a row. As he continued to shock the world, he became hero of the narrator, Paul Tracey. At the time, Paul was a young boy and loved the game of baseball. This novel is put together strategically; one change would completely change my thoughts about this story. For example, if Joe Castle did not accept Warren Tracey’s apology, the whole point of the second half of the novel would be meaningless. Furthermore, if this were to happen my opinion of Calico Joe would change dramatically. Another example would be changing were the people lived in the novel. The setting for the characters hometowns (other than Joe Castle a.k.a. Calico Joe) would not affect the novel. With these changes, I would’ve still enjoyed the novel very

Rivera tells about how he made his way from Puerto Caimito, a poor fishing village in Panama, to the pitcher’s mound at the Yankee’s Stadium, in “The Closer”. He talks about his life back in Puerto Caimito, he says “my first 17 years we lived on the shore of the Gulf of Panama, in a dingy two-room house on a dirt road, just a long toss from the fish-meal plant.” He said “by the time I came around in 1969, the house had gotten several upgrades—electricity and water—but still no bathroom,” he says

In this quote it is showing that they have gotten closer because Maureen called him a friend and she also teaches him how to write a haiku. At the end of the story they have gotten so close that they are practically best friends now. She helped him do well in literacy and they talk back and forth for a long time. When Joe gets a C- on his project and his parents ground him, Maureen talks to his parents and they unground him which makes Joe very happy. It shows how happy he is in the story when he tells her what happened.

Although he is set to be released in less than two years, he does not obtain the help he needs while in prison, where he has resided for almost three decades. It is a devastating story because most people do not understand the help he needs. It's the people who would surprise you the most that do. One of Joe’s Inmates noticed Joe’s severe mental disability, “An inmate incarcerated with Joe writes to EJI about Joe's abuse and his disability" (“Joe Sullivan Character Analysis” N.P.). This inmate realized that Joe does not deserve to be in prison, but instead needs help getting out so that he can receive the help that he needs.

Johnny Got His Gun Dalton Trumbo’s novel, “Johnny Got His Gun” tells all about a father and son relationship that many people may envy for. Trumbo characterizes their relationship with a respectful tone, yet Trumbo also makes the love and trust the father and son share very apparent throughout the novel. Trumbo is able utilize literary devices such as third person point of view and a lack of formal punctuation, using syntax to help the reader have a better perspective on the relationship the father and son partake in.
Another change was a few of the crimes. When readers are analysing a story, they most commonly look for a change in a character's development. An author’s description of a character through sensory detail and tone, accurately gives out how the character is portrayed. In Caline, the reader is able to comprehend that Caline is adventurous, and is beginning to adapt to life in a city. As Caline meets the flagman and begins to work for his sister, “ she had to readjust all her preconceptions to fit the reality of it.” (Choplin 577) Caline realizes that what she imagined was not her reality but she keeps a positive outlook on her future with the woman.

The book I have chosen to review is Boy 21, a fictional read that is written by Matthew Quick. Quick is a New York Times best-selling author debuting in novels such as The Silver Linings Playbook and Love May Fail. To best describe this book, it is a captivating read that is comforting for the mind, as it canvasses the raw and unflinching life of a high school senior who displays love for basketball and life relationships. Furthermore, set in a troubled Belmont city of Philadelphia, Quick incorporates the presence of mobs and violence which is captivating towards the reader and audience. I was intrigued about how the novel was written through Finley the main protagonist, which was Quick’s childhood perspective of life in Philadelphia and his passion towards basketball.
