An aggregate is a group of individuals who temporarily share the same space. When reading the article “Descent into madness” by Mark Colvin you can notice that aggregate can also be used for prisoners. Just for the simple fact that they live together until getting released back into society. You can also see the prisoners have separated themselves into cliques. Using the conflict theory with the riot at the penitentiary of New Mexico. You can notice why you can observe the conflict theory. For example in Ferguson’s book on page two hundred and twenty nine it tells about the riot. The riot was between inmates, some other inmates against them, and the correctional officers. The conflict between the two opposing sides sparked the riot, and the …show more content…
This theory is used several different times throughout the article as well. Realizing the deviance in this time, the inmates would use it as another meaning. The word Snitch is violating the inmate’s norms. More the action of the snitch than the actual word, but it is violating the little trust the inmates believe they have with one another. The consequences to being a snitch is that the other inmates beat up on the “Snitch”. Another way the symbolic interactionism is used is the correctional officers are a symbol of dominance towards the inmates. They are supposed to be in charge of the inmates, but in the case of the riot the inmates overthrew them. Then they took over the dominant role themselves making them the dominant leaders of the …show more content…
He was trying to insight us on what was happening through descriptive words, and trying to make us picture ourselves there as well. To see everything that they went through, and the harsh conditions of the riot. The title of this article has two different meanings in each part. Depending on how you interpret the first part of the title. Descent into madness can mean several different things. It just depends on who you ask, but to me it means that this was the beginning of what sent the prison into a downward spiral. Leading to the destruction of people, and the prison. The second part of the title The New Mexico State Prison Riot means exactly what it says. It is the story about the New Mexico state prison riot, and what went on at the prison. It gives somewhat of a back story, and then tells what happens at the riot. My reactions to this article was at first I was confused on what I was reading until I went back and re- read the article once more. My emotions quickly changed once I re- read the article. I went from being confused to a state of shock, and what the inmates, and correctional officers went through. Reading this article was very interesting in the beginning, and even in the middle, but towards the end it did start to get a little
In the article “‘I Was Terrified’: Inmates Say They Paid a Brutal Price for a Guard’s Injury” by Tom Robbins. It tells how that too harsh of an punishment could never be an effective way to crime. Also, it proposes that under racist and sexist government, and social classes , prisons are bound to be harsh and discriminatory institutions. Angela Davis argues that prison helps us see problems with our society and especially the problems that are
The reading begins by explaining that prison violence occurs because violent people and people from violent subcultures are the people who inhabit prisons and because of their violent nature we have prison violence. Lockwood goes even deeper into the problem and explains that prison violence is the result of these inmates feeling vulnerable in the prison environment
Obedience in Humans In 1973 the article "The Stanford Prison Experiment" by Philip G. Zimbardo created an experiment to study the daily prison life. Without strict orders, a person would not act out in such a way. Following the rules and staying obedient the whole time is a question Zimbardo wanted to find out. Zimbardo was curious to see if people would conform to the specific role they are performing in order to show obedience.
Overcrowded prisons lead to a whole host of issues, but most notably, it is a safety concern (not only for the prisoners’ lives but also corrections officers) because it creates a stressful environment (Portland State University). A stressful environment leads to increase tension and agitation which can then lead to acts of violence and corrections officers calling in “sick”. An increase in the number of cases handled by parole officers has led to members of the VBBC gang to go either unpunished for parole violations or to return back to prison for violations. As a result, what we are seeing now is that VBBC is using its numbers and control to work the corrections
Conflict theory has been used to describe the discrepancies in power and distribution of resources among the dominate group and the subordinate groups. Racial inequalities and racism among the groups has played a big role in the concept of conflict theory. Conflict theory examines the rising conflict between the dominate group, or white ruling class, and racial minorities, such as African Americans. This conflict and inequality among the races may be a reason why 20.2 percent of African American males die by homicide. In fact, African Americans are six times as likely as whites to be killed by homicide.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, by Ken Kesey, considers the qualities in which society determines sanity. The label of insanity is given when someone is different from the perceived norm. Conversely, a person is perceived as sane when their behavior is consistent with the beliefs of the majority. Although the characters of this novel are patients of a mental institution, they all show qualities of sanity. The book is narrated by Chief Brodmen, an observant chronic psychiatric patient, who many believe to be deaf and dumb.
During the 1900’s, two riots came about that each took place in Los Angeles and both dealt with social, economic, and political issues. One incident was the Watts Riots of 1965 and the other was the Rodney Kings Riots of 1992 in which both had similarities and differences that were related to the beatings of black citizens by white police officers. We can see how this triggered the caused an outrage and a national debate on police brutality. These riots erupted the social causes burning of buildings and the killings Caucasians even when they had nothing to do with the beating of either black men. A social cause that came from this is that the negroes ended up looting stores, setting fires, beating up Caucasian people who walked by in which they would pull from cars, the burning, stoning and shooting of police officers.
Inmate power was accommodated by the prison’s administration directly through programs and indirectly through tolerance of illegal activities. Prior to the riot, the programs enhanced chances of parole, which led to increased participation. They were also crucial to “self-policing” process within the inmate environment. However, the prison also faced high levels of illegal drug trafficking within the prison.
because of a situation about a burn book, and the first thing that comes out of her mouth is words of manipulation towards the principle saying” I don’t think my father, the inventor of toaster strudel, would be too happy to hear about this.” Gretchen believes that she is in a higher class than other people and that with her parent’s wealth and fame she could get herself out of trouble no matter what she does. The conflict theory states that there is always tension between groups of people because there is one group wanting to run and rule over the other. In Mean Girls, we see this happen with the Plastics, which we could compare to the bourgeoisie during Karl Marx 's time. The movie explains perfectly what some people in a higher class compared to a lower class believes that everything revolves around them and the other students that are considered lower class needs to obey their every single command.
The thorough analysis of text leaves no doubt that a prison is a model of a whole society, containing its own relations of subjugation and leadership.
