Farrow was the niece of Frederick Douglass, an African-American social reformer and abolitionist who pastored a small, holiness church in Houston, Texas. Farrow had been born into slavery in Norfolk, Virginia. Charles Parham was holding meetings in Houston and invited Farrow to be the governess for his children while the Parham family went to Kansas for two months in the summer.
