During 1980, Britain was going through a period of major change that included: education reforms, the rise of power dressing and the finishing of the Northern Ireland peace process, however one thing did not change, that was there government. In June 1987 the UK General elections were held in which Margaret Thatcher, leader of the British Conservative Party won a third consecutive term in office and had been in office since 1979. At that time many people dislike Margaret Thatcher because she had destroyed Britain’s manufacturing industry and her policies led to mass unemployment, she supported capital punishment, and she brought on a social housing crisis. The election prompted Roland Orzabal one of the members of Tears For Fears, who came from a hard working background, took an interest in politics and socialism. Orzabal was upset that Thatcher had been re-elected and wanted to write a protest song, this resulted in the making of the song 'Sowing The Seeds Of Love'. This song was released in 1989 as the first single for their album The Seeds of Love, and.It became a worldwide hit, reaching the top five in various countries, including getting number two on the billboard hot 100. It closed the 1980s by making an exhilarating homage to the Beatles in the 60s.
What made this song so popular was the crowds immediate reaction to relate the song to the Beatles. “Sowing the seeds of love” was a pastche to the elements of the Beatles. In the beginning of the song, the lyrics “There is an egg on your face:”,was a clear references to the beatles song “I am a Walrus,” in which it had the lyrics “I am the eggman” in the beginning the Beatles song.
