1. How have your own attitudes and beliefs been influenced by participating in this petition? What did you learn about diversity from your research as well as from those you worked in the past on similar projects? Give specific examples. My participation in the “Remove Judge Aaron Persky from the Bench For Decision in Brock Turner rape case” petition has influenced my attitudes and beliefs towards this matter in both good and bad ways. I still believe that no matter race, sex, or success of the defendant, a sexual assault is a crime and should be treated as such. What I used to believe but has now changed for me is that with all the safety precautions that college campus take to maintain a safe environment, such as blue lights and campus guardians, you would suspect a college to be …show more content…
From example, since we have been reading and learning about different types of laws in this course I connected it to the “Remove Judge Aaron Persky from the Bench For Decision in Brock Turner rape case” petition and researched the types of laws that dealt with the issues of the petition, sexual assault. In my research I conclude that there are different types of laws on sex crimes in each state but the minim punishment is a prison term which opposed the very suspicious sentencing of Brock Turner of 6 months in county jail but released at 3 months on good behavior. My participation in this petition has changed the way I feel about the certain issue of the punishment of sexual assault. Before participating in this petition I never truly knew the issues on sexual assault, so with my little knowledge on the issue I never bothered with the unlawful punishment on the Brock Turner sexual assault case. But once participating in the petition and learning/ researching on the issue I felt more aware and involved with the certain issue of the punishment on sexual
The Duke lacrosse case implicated criminal actions of: first degree rape, first degree sex offenses’ and kidnapping charges against three Duke University lacrosse players; Collin Finnerty, Reade Seligman and Dean Evans (North Carolina State Bar v. Nifong, 2007,p.18-20). According to Mosteller (2007) the case started with “gang rape allegations” by Crystal Mangum, a black exotic dancer who was also a student at North Carolina Central University on the morning of March 14th, 2006 (p.1337). The alleged rape occurred during the Duke lacrosse teams’ party at 610 North Buchanan Blvd (North Carolina State Bar v. Nifong, 2007,p.1). Suspiciously Mangum could not make any identifications of her attackers even after viewing most Duke lacrosse team members including the names mentioned above and the lacrosse team members who actually lived at 610 North Buchanan Blvd (Mosteller, 2007, p.1407). Mosteller (2007) also mentions that Mike Nifong had to know that
Police brutality is at an all time high, with the expansion of social media it has made racism appear more prominent. Racism is something that’s existed for generations however social media has given people the ability to see racism first hand for themselves and has also given the public to respond openly to the issue at hand. The Trayvon Martin case was one of the biggest cases that sparked the racial profiling discussion, Trayvon Martin was a African American male walking home from a convenient store at night with a hoodie on when he was racial profiled by George Zimmerman, a Hispanic male who saw trayvon martin as a threat based solely on the color of his skin and the hoodie that he was wearing. Trayvon was unarmed and harmless but do to someone else pre conceived
A moral that is common to both To Kill a Mockingbird and an article titled “ Outrage Over 6 Month Sentence for Brock Turner Rape Case”, is that favoring a certain race or social class causes society to degress rather than progress. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, the Ewells had accused a man named Tom Robinson of rape and they already acted like they’ve won the case because “ ‘ when it’s a white man’s word against a black man’s, the white man always wins. ’”(295), they knew that whatever they accused Tom of they could’ve gotten away with it as a result of the color of their skin. More importantly, there wasn’t really a case to begin with as “ Tom was a dead man the minute Mayella Ewell opened her mouth and screamed.” (323), the result was already decided before the case got to court.
The assets for this particular subject are very astonishing. The PBS site gives, courses of events, video cuts, lesson arrangements, and essential sources, for example, letters, and motion picture cuts about the Emmett Till Murder. These assets could be utilized as a part of different ways and understudies, and instructors are confident to get a full comprehension of how the Emmett Till Murder activated the Civil Rights
I am writing a letter to complain about how the homicide case of Emmett Till in August-September 1955, And how the trail of Roy Bryant and J.W. Millam was handled in a white sided manner where most of the jury went on the side or Roy and J.W. just because they were white during the black rights uprising. The entire trial should have been falsified the entire trial for infringement of the case and the jury for purposely have a one sided jury that would highly against the black ethnicity, especially having the being handled in the deep south that is known for been especially/highly racist. I request a mistrial and a redo if you will, on the Emmett Till murder case on a new not as racist judicial system so the family that is still alive can
After spending nearly a year fighting over the devastating trial, another rape victim has their justice ripped from their grasp. In January of 2015, Brock Turner, a well-known Stanford swimmer committed an act of assault on an innocent victim who couldn’t recall what had happened. Two nearby bikers who witnessed Turner on top of the victim in an alleyway behind a dumpster, chased down and tackled the unforgiving man. Because of the victim’s intoxicated state, Turner’s attorneys used that to their advantage, claiming that only Brock could recollect the events that happened in that evening. The victim received no opportunity to express how the assault had mentally damaged her as his attorneys picked and prodded the victim through questions about
In 2015, Brock Turner, a student from Stanford, sexually assaulted a young woman on campus. Turner claimed that “his actions [were] the product of a culture of drinking, peer pressure and ‘sexual promiscuity’’ which led him to having 6 months in jail on Judge Persky’s ruling. The aftermath of the case, Stanford University, according to Erik Ortiz, “banned hard liquor at all on campus parties; [however], beer and wine are still allowed”, meaning that Stanford made minor changes to address future problems and had little action on the topic. College should focus on sexual assault on campus by enforcing punishment, passing more policies, and learning to ignore their image to reduce the number of rape cases on campus.
Do you view the young woman as a victim of rape, even though she was under the influence and the defendant never penetrated her with his penis? - Yes, I see the young woman as a victim of rape because whether or not he penetrated her with his penis, he had the intent to because her underwear was off, her legs were spread open, he was erect, and he was on top of her as if he was having sex with her. Also, the young woman was unconscious at the time and had no idea this was even taking place. Brock Turner clearly had gone after someone he knew he could get something out of because at the time the victim could not verbally consent to him.
One in five women and one in sixteen men are sexually assaulted while in college. 63% of sexual assaults are not reported to police and only about 2 to 10% of reports are found to be false. In Jon Krakauer’s book: Missoula, Rape and the Justice System in a College Town. Krakauer focuses on the many rapes that occur on the college campus in Missoula. Most of the rapes that happen on college campuses are done by men, but to say all men are rapists is unjust and sexist.
Many words come up when thinking of ‘College’, some of which are: learning, independence, goals, party, and freedom; although, that’s not always the case. At residential colleges rape culture has grown tremendously throughout time. In the article, “Mishandling Rape”, written by Jed Rubenfeld completely analyzes and supports the problem of rape in colleges throughout the United States. In this article, he establishes the importance of his argument, the audience he is hoping to speak out to, various logistics, and has a strong ethos appeal which supports his argument.
Introduction Horace’s assertion regarding adversity and character directly correlates the two by saying if you have had hardship then it will build your character. Martin Luther King Jr lived his life constantly facing racial discrimination and used that hardship to do great things and fight for the segregation that he struggled with. Contrary to MLK a college student, Brock Turner, lived his life as an average wealthy white kid who later raped a girl. The dichotomies between the two prove that your past does shape you , it may not shape your for the better but it shapes you into the person you are and it influences your views and morals.
The Brock Turner case is a very controversial case that spark debate on the subject of white male privilege and the abuse of power. People speculate that the only reason Turner received such a minimal sentence is because his parents are affluent and influential, due to their success and status as a white professional. He was found guilty and the judge gave him a very lenient sentence. Many people saw this as unfair to the girl that was raped and to everyone else impacted by this man 's crime. The judge 's name is Aaron Persky.
It looks scary how vulnerable the survivor can be at the time of assault. However, as long as the matter of violence is associated, the students at college campuses are safer than their non-college mates. Some training and education has been administrated to the students for awareness about the violence and sexual assaults. Even, with increased training and education, most of the college campuses have much longer way to go for decreasing the intensity and number of assaults and the incidents have immense negative impact on the society and people around us.
Aaron Persky, the judge in charge Brock Allen Turner’s rape case, should receive the consequences for giving the perpetrator a lenient sentence that was viewed as unfavorable to the public eye; but rather than have him forcefully removed, the judge should resign as a prosecutor for making a decision unworthy of a prosecutor. Instead of immediately losing his job for an unfair verdict, other factors should contribute to the severity of his punishment. However, it would be more favorable for Persky to relinquish his position as a judge than have his job taken away from him. It is shown through Turner’s case that Persky is likely to be an unqualified judge because his sentence for Turner was unbefitting of a legal prosecutor. His actions had caused
1. What is your research topic? The research topic that I am conducting research on, is diversity in the political participation process overall. When conducting research on this topic, I do not solely want to discuss the concept of diversity based on race.
