The Revealing Star
Whether we think about it or not, symbols are very much a part of our life. To each individual, stars symbolize a certain kind of meaning. For Margaret the star symbol appears to create a range of associations beyond itself. The star symbolizes Margaret’s slow growing tumor, her china collection, and her guilt and shame. In Broken for you, by Stephanie Kallos, the symbol of the star reveals Margaret to be a different person than she used to be.
Margaret’s slow growing tumor is symbolized through a star by the way the tumor is growing. The tumor itself is not necessarily star-shaped but the cells in which it originates are. The low grade tumor gave her time to do things she does throughout the book. She called it, “A slow-growing star,” which symbolized her tumor and the amount of time Margaret had left (Kallos 8). Margaret appeared to be more open about new things after finding out about the slow-growing star. It motivated her to step outside of her comfort zone. The star in her brain, then symbolizes the effects of the china upon her. Possessing guilt and shame of holding onto the china accompanying the untreated tumor was literally killing her. When she finally did something about it, by smashing the china to rebuild herself, her health stabilized for a time. “Compared with the January CT, the tumor demonstrates no appreciable change,” Doctor Leising’s explained to Margaret (Kallos 276). Without any medical treatment, Margaret was healthy for her circumstances just letting go of the china. The star mirrored Margaret’s guilt and shame by not treating the tumor or letting go of the past, yet once she did let go of the past, she was rid of all the guilt and shame and transformed
In the short story, “ The Possibility of Evil” author Shirley Jackson uses several symbols in her story. The symbols were used to tell her story about an old lady named Ms. Strangeworth. Three main symbols used through the story where her roses, the letters, and Ms. Strangeworth herself. In the beginning of the story the author tells us about how important the roses were to Ms. Strangeworth. The roses were passed down from generation to generation, she inherited them.
During the book Shattered, Ian shows several different character traits. Snobbish, selfish, confused, scared, helpful, generous and mature. In the beginning of the book, Ian is quite snobbish. In the text, Ian thought all the homeless people were “crazy” since he's a typical stuck up rich kid and thought that he has better than everybody else. I feel that Ian was also selfish because he only worked at the soup kitchen because he had to (or else he would fail his class).
Then, the protagonist attempts to fix her problem by devoting herself to her work entirely and conduct her own research in addition to her normal work responsibilities. Miss Leavitt starts to notice blinking in Cepheid stars while conducting her normal work and asks permission from her supervisor to stay overtime to research them. The people who are Jews wear Yellow stars on their clothes to show that they are Jewish so they can identify who is a Jewish person and who is not a Jewish person. This piece of symbolism is important because that 's is exactly how they killed them they just saw if you had a yellow star and they could take you without any difficulty of identifying you, if you are a Jew or not a Jew. In the book The Cage, the big oak tree was used as a symbol that Mrs. Gruber does not care for Riva and her family because many people were against Jews and she is one of the persons that had joined the Hitler force. This piece of symbolism is important in the story since Hitler came to power many people were anti-Semitic people and Mrs. Gruber was one of them so she decided to cut down the big oak tree. He arrives to work and see's Pino, his coworker, and son of Sal, give him a dirty look and said, " you are late". Pino is a racist person who does not like black people and does not get along with Mookie. In contrast, Vito is a nice and respectful individual who is friends with Mookie. It is with these four individuals that Sal's pizzeria had become so well known in New York. Sal is a person who likes to help everyone and is a well-rounded individual.

In the book Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand, there are three other adjectives that can be used to describe Louie Zamperini, the main character. These adjectives are determined, compassionate, and defiant. These attributes can be proven through not only Louie’s actions, but his thoughts as well. For group 1, Andrew Loftis started the discussion with the question, “What conflicts were presented in your book?” Thus, he answered his question and goes on to discuss the main character of his book, Breaking Beautiful and explained what the main character, Allie had to face after being involved in a car accident. He commented how the character’s physical appearance has changed due to the accident and how the death of her boyfriend has affected her. While explaining the conflict, Andrew also summarized the plot, giving the group some background information about his novel. After he talked, immediately, Nick responded and talked about the conflict in his book.
