Brother Is To Blame For Doodle's Death

Pride can be a really good thing that keeps you going and makes you try hard, but it is also a very destructive force that can hurt you and others. Doodle was one of those people who got hurt because of someone's pride. In “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst the story shows that the narrator is guilty of Doodle’s death. These are my two reasons supporting this claim. First off the narrator was ashamed of Doodle, and second He just simply did not like Doodle. Here is my evidence.

In The Scarlet Ibis, Brother and Doodles story is a perfect example as to why pride can be a destructive force. Doodle was pushed to the extreme by his brother. His brothers selfish pride took over his life and he just lost control, he couldn't handle it and his pride, and as a result an innocent life was lost, therefore Brother is guilty of Doodles death.

“The Scarlet Ibis,” written by James Hurst, is a bittersweet story. A weak autistic child is born into a family of cotton farmers. They name the child Doodle, which was given by his older brother. His brother was often cruel, but he pushed Doodle to work to fit in. They fail in their efforts at the end of summer. The older brother gets mad, and Doodle dies. Doodle is overall a favorite character for people because he’s just an incredible character everyone could love.

“Selfish people tend to only be good to themselves… then are surprised when they are alone”,(unknown).This is how Brother found himself when he abandoned Doodle during a storm. In The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst a child named William Armstrong (Doodle) is born with a medical condition who revokes him the ability to walk. But the selfishness, his Brother has been blinded by makes him want to teach his Brother to walk out of embarrassment “of having a crippled brother.” Therefore Brother is two faced he can be selfish or he can be altruistic to Doodle, which demonstrates how complex brotherly love can be.

In the short story, “The Scarlet Ibis” James Hurst uses red to symbolize warning, death, and guilt to show the change the older brother goes through, as he takes care of Doodle.

Have you ever killed someone because your pride was hurt? The narrator in the short story "The Scarlet Ibis," by James Hurst, has always wanted a brother so bad. He finally gets a brother that everyone expects to die before being born. By some miracle the little brother didn’t die, so they decided to name him Doodle. At the end Doodle does die and this essay is to say if the narrator is guilty or not. The narrator didn’t really love Doodle, was cruel to him, and thought him how to stuff out of his own selfishness, so thank to the gift of pride, the narrator is guilty for the murder of his brother Doodle.

Pushing to extremes can be extremely dangerous when talking about something. There is a line between pushing to the limits and pushing beyond the limits. Brother pushing Doodle beyond the limits created great danger throughout the story. Brother was at fault for Doodle’s death for pushing him too hard.

When reality does not meet our expectations does that give us the right to simply throw it aside, or abuse the reality we were given? The narrator of “The Scarlet Ibis” was six years old when Doodle was born, he had many dreams of what they would do together and all the adventures they would take. Doodle was born as a weak, frail baby, his parents expected him to die very quickly. He survived when everyone doubted that he would and he grew to be a weak, frail child that was alive, withstanding his limitations. The narrator had illusions of the missed adventures and tried still, to achieve them even though his brother was oftentimes physically unable. The narrator is responsible for his brother’s death because he allowed his own pride and embarrassment drive him to push Doodle because he was not the same as the other children, he was aggressive toward Doodle and at times abusive, and pushed Doodle too far and didn’t understand his limitations.

In the short story “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst, a boy is born crippled and no one thought he would live. The boy lived however, and they named him Doodle. Doodle and his brother were very close and Doodle loved his brother and never wanted his brother to leave him alone. Doodle’s brother was ashamed to have a crippled brother so he attempted to help doodle become normal throughout doodle’s life in the story. Doodle loved his brother, even though his brother was very selfish in his reasons to help Doodle to become normal, and his brother realized how selfish and guilty he was when it was to late for Doodle in the end.

Doodles brother is responsible for the death of his own brother. Three big reasons that led me to believe this is that he always wanted doodle gone from the beginning, he was ashamed and very embarrassed of having a disabled brother, and that he only helped doodle for his own personal benefit. All of those show why he left his brother in that storm to die.

Pride is an amazing, horrible thing, A fork in the road that leads to two things, life and death. My parents always told me “Pride comes before a fall”. I never truly understood what that meant before I read this story it means that if you are too confident about yourself, something bad will happen to show you that you are not as good as you think you are. Doodle, the younger brother is very attached to Brother, his older brother, Brother is embarrassed of Doodle because has physical and mental problems that keep him from doing stuff that “normal” people can do. Brothers pride destroyed his relationship with Doodle by abusing Doodle, Forcing Doodle to learn to walk and swim when he didn’t feel safe doing so, and doing something that the doctor had said not to do, killing Doodle.

A brother making his younger sibling touch his casket is very cruel Then threatening if it is not touched you would be left alone, which is Doodle's biggest fear. The brother manipulates Doodle on purpose. This shows cruelty from an older sibling making their own blood suffer for matter enjoyment. This point could be considered "tough love" to some and make him mentally stronger as a person.

Pride can be a positive or negative element in someone's life. It can help them succeed in their efforts or cause them to become greedy and selfish. In the short story "The Scarlet Ibis" by James Hurst, the main character Brother shows the theme of pride through his persistence and love for Doodle.
