Guilty Without a Doubt In The Scarlet Ibis, Brother and Doodles story is a perfect example as to why pride can be a destructive force. Doodle was pushed to the extreme by his brother. His brothers selfish pride took over his life and he just lost control, he couldn't handle it and his pride, and as a result an innocent life was lost, therefore Brother is guilty of Doodles death. He practically left him to die. On page three hundred fifty-three he says “I ran as fast as I could, leaving him far behind with a wall of rain dividing us.” First of all from the story we knew that Doodle hated being left alone. Second we also knew that is was difficult for him to stand, walk, or run on his own much less in a huge storm in a heavy downpour by himself in the mud. Brother knew this the most because he said himself. “A long list of don'ts went with him, all of which I ignored once we got out of the house.” (Hurst 345) Brother was ashamed of having him as his little brother. “I began to weep, and the tear-blurred vision in the red before me looked very familiar.” Forrest 3 (Hurst 354) When Doodles life was ended prematurely Brother realized after all of this time, how horrible he had been to poor Doodle and how much he truly loved and will miss him. In the end he may be .upset and all of his emotions came out, but he still is the one that made Doodle do all of the things. He is the reason that Doodle is gone and therefore is guilty. Brothers pride spun his life out of control. With that one of the biggest destructive forces is pride as seen in the story. It ended one's life and destroyed another. Brother was ashamed of Doodle, so he pushed him to the limit, and when the time came left him to die. Therefore Brother is guilty of murder in the case of Doodles
