DATA ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION India is the largest producer of cotton in the world accounting for about 25% of the world cotton production and having the largest area under cotton cultivation, around 25% of the total world area under cotton. With the introduction of Bt cotton the factor productivity growth has increased and India has shown remarkably good results which can be seen in the table below. India has shown a 3.3% growth in its total factor productivity after adopting Bt seeds which is almost same as the growth in USA and South Africa. Cost of cultivation per hectare in 2002-03 in Andhra Pradesh was Rs. 28562 which increased to Rs. 49401 In 2010-11. Similar increase in cost of cultivation is observed in all the 3 states from 2002 to 2012 showing that adoption of Bt cotton increases the cost incurred by farmers. Figure 2- Cost of cultivation per hectare of cotton in the 3 region for 2002-03 to 2011-12 Following are the case studies included in the draft paper submitted to Department of Agriculture & Cooperation Ministry of Agriculture under the name ‘Impact Evaluation & Socio Economic Study of Bt Cotton’. Various farmers from different states were interviewed regarding their opinions on Bt cotton and following were their answers: Case 1: Tukaram Garderkar, a farmer in Maharashtra said he cultivates Bt cotton in 12 acre of land and he is also one of the progressive farmers in the area. He gets 8 quintal of yield per acre. He says that yield of Bt cotton is certainly better than non-Bt cotton. Quality is also better than non-Bt cotton. He earns good money by producing of Bt cotton. And the additional income has improved financial condition of the household. He also points out that the disease/ pest are also increasing simultaneously.
