Building Automation Systems Networking, Benefits, and Challenges
A building automation enables various components in a building, to communicate with each other and enhance the living conditions within the space while reducing energy use and operational costs.
A basic building automation system (BAS) can monitor parameters such as the temperature, light, humidity, occupancy and activities levels. Then, and using algorithms, adjust the appropriate equipment to suit the program levels. The automatic control improves the internal conditions, - making them comfortable, safe and secure while reducing energy consumption.
Other features include monitoring the equipment condition as well as safety or security issues, and sending alerts or sounding

The dashboard is usually located within the building but some have the option of remote access through various devices, allowing facility managers to monitor and control the building conditions from anywhere through the internet.
Networking for building automation
There are different competing wiring systems for building automation; these include powerlines, USB, Ethernet, fiber and other forms of networking. The wired and wireless networks such as those for data are every common. These utilize UTP cables, fiber cables, Ethernet switches, wireless access points, and others in LAN and optional WAN configurations.
The LANs interconnect the various devices in the building while WAN enables communication between different buildings and other resources such as Cloud, remote control devices or rooms. This allows facility managers to monitor and control the systems remotely using mobile or desktop devices over the internet.
While the devices and systems within the building communicate locally, they, in most cases, do not require the internet, but the WAN does, for the system to connect to the external

LonWorks: This is low bandwidth communication protocol that connects devices through fiber optics, power lines, and other networking media. It also uses several network interfaces including the U10/U20 USB network interface and others. It is a proprietary protocol with a limited number of users which are mostly manufacturers.
Benefits of Building Automation
Building automation enables efficient control of the various systems and conditions in the building. This allows the occupants and owners to save costs, improve comfort and living conditions. It adds the ability to automatically monitor and adjust the lighting, air conditioning, heating, ventilation, security and other parameters. Specific benefits include;
• Ability to control systems throughout the day and night including weekends and holidays.
• Reducing energy use helps to build owners or tenants to save on electricity and other energy bills, reduce operational costs and increase efficiency
• facility usage data helps the managers to make better decisions when scheduling lighting, HVAC, security and safety systems
• Improved comfort for occupants and environment for equipment, hence increased
1.3 How do local area networks (LANs) differ from wide area networks (WANs) and backbone networks (BNs) Local area networks are limited within an organization Wide area networks extend over a large geographical distance and may be privately owned or rented Backbone network are the part of network infrastructure that feeds the connected networks 1.8 Describe the seven layers in the OSI network model and what they do. Application – this layer is specific to applications and provides services such as email, network software services and file transfers Presentation - In this layer, the data is formatted in a schema that network understands, and also manages data encryption and decryption Session – this layer establishes and controls the data communication between
In Ethernet data is send in form of packages, to control
Several components required to implement VPN depends on the type of VPN i-e. Remote Access VPN, or site-to-site VPN. Network design is crucial to decide the throughput, choice of devices and number of users. There are two types of networks where VPN is needed to implement. 1. Site-to-site VPN—is provides connection between branches i-e. LAN-to-LAN VPN with their own internet instead of dedicated leased lines.
Which is also known as the core layer campus backbone network. Essentially everyone on campus will have internet connectivity and connect to any server or printer located in any of the other buildings. The reason behind this is the data center is the home of the database servers as well as mail servers. Any devices for example printers connected to the network users will be able to have access to them. If users needed to access the network from home or other features we can add VPN to the network.
5. A wireless access point (WAP) allows devices with wireless capabilities to connect to a network without the need for any cables such as Ethernet. 7. DTE short for Data Terminal Equipment, a device that controls data traveling to or from a computer. 8.
As such, this protocol operates at the data link layer of the OSI model. L2TP consists
• ICMP; is one of the main rules of the internet protocol suite. It is used by system devices, like router, to send error messages showing, for example, that a demanded service is not offered or that a crowd or router could not be touched. • DHCP; Dynamic host configuration protocol is a customer server rules that repeatedly delivers an internet rules (IP) address and other linked arrangement information such as the subnet mask and avoidance entry. • Bluetooth; Bluetooth is a wireless communication technology that lets people to usefully connect their plans with other policies “and “the character of the technology is developing to not only allow devices to talk with one another, but actually allow the all-in-one communication between devices, native requests and the cloud.” •
1. Traffic control: As the data communication is the most energy-consuming part of the wireless sensor networks by decreasing the amount of traffic, energy can be saved. To distribute traffic effectively from a central node to other nodes, investigations are still needed in the network. 2. Preserve the traffic load balancing:
Question Set 7 A) What types of methods and tools are used to measure, document and analyze ancient fault activity along the San Andreas Fault and its associated faults? For example, how do geologists determine how long a fault has been active, how often it ruptures, its relative offset motion, and how much offset? Note that the term "ancient" means fault activity that occurred thousands to millions of years ago - long before seismologists were around. Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale: Measures the intensity of an earthquake Richter Scale: Used to measure the magnitude of an earthquake (Tarbuck, 2013)
Sharing Internet Access: within a computer network learners are able to access the internet at once. Speed: Using a network is a faster way for sharing and transferring files. Without a network, files are shared by replicating them to a floppy disk. Cost: Networkable versions of many popular software programmes are available at significant savings compared to buying individual licensed copies. It also allows easier upgrading of the program.
It requires one to always and persistently be online. 6. Web2 is made up using a user friendly app. A user can make updates as one pleases. One can edit, share or even print data.
To protect from the airborne contaminants of an automation space, there is a NEMA 4/4X enclosure around the device. The operating temperature of the device should stay between 0 and 50 degrees Celsius. The device also has a proper operating humidity which is from 5% to 95%. The are a large amount of ports for the user to connect to.
Walking up to the magnificent La Pedrera building the first thing I had to see was the pillar known as the elephant's foot. This pillar is notorious and was mentioned in the reading due it occupying too much space on the sidewalk of Passeig de Gracia. During construction Gaudi was informed of this by the government and told to make modifications, but Gaudi wouldn't budge. He wrote a letter back to the government and stated that if he were to modify the pillar, he would include a mocking inscription that would be-little the government. Fortunately the government rethought their demands and the pillar wasn't changed but this small aspect of the construction process I find awesome.
INTRODUCTION A smart grid is a power network which is based on digital technology is used to supply power, via two-way digital communications. A smart grid system allows for monitoring, analysis, control and communication within the supply chain and helps improve efficiency, reduce energy consumption and cost, and maximize the transparency and reliability of the energy supply chain. The smart grid was introduced with the aim of overcoming the weaknesses of conventional electrical grids by using smart meters.
IOT (Internet of things) plays a crucial role in smart home technology. These devices share user’s data between two devices. Raspberry Pi is the technology we use for building a smart home. Nowadays, we use technologies like Zigbee and Z-wave for protocol communication in building a smart home. - Smart TVs, connected to the internet to access any apps like music and videos.
