In session 3 and 4 we had a look at “Playing at your strengths” (specifically “What makes a leader?”) and “Building resilience”.
Playing at your strengths:
“What makes a leader?” is a topic very important to Google simply because without their unique leadership structure the style in which the company continues to drive the future in technology would not exist the way it does today.
The five elements that make a leader seen in class are very well reflected in Google’s corporate structure. Google wants their workforce to perform the best they can and will go a long way in order to provide the perfect environment in which each individual can thrive. Resilience is the “Ability to recover quickly from sickness, change or misfortune” but what does that mean in regards to employees and what does this mean for a company? In connection with a company such as Google resilience can be essential. Constant deadlines, however much fun the project might be, are stressful to most individuals at times and can lead to serious problems such as burnout. Other factors of stress besides deadlines include the need to optimize ones time keeping the 70/20/10 rule in mind and the temporality of living by this rule. In order to keep the workforce happy and well Google has adapted a unique approach, which is reflected in the Google working environment. There are a large range of faculties employees can use in order to deal with pressure; places where they can relax and recharge in order to be more efficient and resilient to every day challenges. Google facilities include sleeping pods, free food all around their campus, meditation classes, free use of Google vehicles and employees even get a free massage on their birthday. There is a one example of a Google employee that is very fitting in regards to resilience. He is an Googler Bill Duane, a software engineer, designed what he calls neutral self-hacking (a meditation class intro) at Google while he was leading a thirty person team and his father was struggling with a life threating disease. Resilience is the ability to overcome adversity, fear, and show strength. Many people run away from fear, it is the one thing many hope they never have to encounter. Fear makes people buckle and waver not wanting to fight against it. It is those who are truly resilient like Jason Zimmerman and Frederick Douglass, who faced more fear than anyone could imagine, but still fought through that fear because they are the true definition of resilience. Jason Zimmerman, who was first a cancer patient at the age of six months had so much fear to overcome.
This resilience has been shown to help managers to enable their staff to withstand the changing needs of the healthcare system. However, this is not something that can be taught, and is not a trait but more of a state of mind including being realistic, in the moment, aware and prepared (Countu, 2002). One main criticism of this observation is that we will have no way of knowing whether the staff were acting as they usually would or whether they were acting differently as they were aware they were being observed, as this has been shown to change the nature of a person’s behaviour and is more commonly referred to as the “Hawthore Effect” (Campbell, Maxey and Watson, 1995). Another key issue is that again these views are subjective and emotion/demeaner are not always universally interpreted.
1. I feel that forgiveness is not for the other person, it’s a process that provides you the energy and the self-confidence to move on. One reason why is forgiveness is not for the other is because in my experience, forgiveness is a situation where serious harm has been done to you physically or mentally. The next steps are finding a way to relieve your conscious of the harm caused.
I like reading Anna Harrington’s readings about resilience and how it defines a person in how they strive and overcome challenges and obstacles that come their way in this world. People with resilience as I would see would be looked as “survivors” unlike those people without resilience tend not to make it in this ever-changing world we live in. I can relate this article to my life being born and raised in Chicago, Illinois to going off into the U.S. Army with multiple of combat deployments during the Iraq war, my time spent in law enforcement agency/legal government sector and to where I am at now. What does resilience really mean to you? The literal definition to resilience is the ability to cope with problems and setbacks. In the story Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, she shows us all different kind of ways that the characters in her story used the skills that Kendra Cherry was talking about, to help them out of every situation. In this story it shows how certain situations affect people in different ways and how each person goes through seven skills. The characteristic that Louie undergoes is the skill of Strong Problem-Solving.
Resilience First Aid Kit-Reflection Resilience is defined as; the ability to adapt to stressful, or difficult situations. If you are resilient, you are able to adapt to situations which trouble you without major difficulties. The task was to “Create a Resilience First-Aid Kit”. My resilience first aid kit includes items that I believe will assist someone to overcome problems, stress or hard situations that may occur throughout their time.
In developing this paper on leadership, I examined what was most important to me as a leader. As I reflected on my leadership philosophy, I thought about my experiences and the principals that I have learned through my own self-discovery and the observation of other leaders that I have had throughout my life. My leadership philosophy paper will focus on what leadership is to me, core values, and knowledge of others. In thinking about my definition of leadership, I thought of what was most important to me in and as a leader.
Hardy, Concato & Gill (2004) stated that resilient people are those who display “the capacity to remain well, recover, or even thrive in face of adversity”. Masten (2001) as mentioned that they are the ordinary person dealing with the challenges and tragedies of everyday real life. For instance, the response of many Americans to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and individuals’ efforts to rebuild their lives shows their resiliency. Being resilient does not mean that a person does not have or had experience difficulty or distress; the emotional pain and sadness are common but the path to resilience is likely to involve considerable emotional distress. It is an ordinary process for humans to cope up with “demonstrable risks” (Masten, 2001) i.e. threats that have noticeably brought unwanted issues in one’s life. Resilience can be defined on two foundations; risks and positive adaptation. It is a quality of a person to accommodate with unfavorable alterations in life derived as a result of exposure to risks such as financial crisis, divorce, health problems or disaster. Therefore, resilience cannot exist in absence of risks.
The Importance of Resilience Resilience is the way towards adapting in the midst of misfortune, injury, catastrophe, dangers, or huge swathes of stress. It signifies rebound from troublesome encounters by honing the abilities required to give you a chance to travel through misfortune, as opposed to getting noticeably characterized by it. For better understanding Resilience is the procedure and result of effectively adjusting to troublesome or testing life encounters and the capacity to transcend one's conditions. I myself an ardent student and practised resilience to bounce back from a catastrophic event which rocked my life. In the event, if I had not practised resilience, that overarching circumstance would have overpowered by misfortune and my value would have impacted into a more serious danger of utilizing undesirable methods for dealing with stress to manage life's difficulties, for example, animosity towards self or others.
According to Masten (2001) “resiliency refers to a class of phenomena characterized by good outcomes in spite of serious threats to adaptation or development” (p. 228). Garmezy (1991) considers the intelligence level of an individual and ability to possess the mind power to tackle an adverse situation as one pleases as the core characteristics of a resilient individual.
