In session 3 and 4 we had a look at “Playing at your strengths” (specifically “What makes a leader?”) and “Building resilience”.

Playing at your strengths:

“What makes a leader?” is a topic very important to Google simply because without their unique leadership structure the style in which the company continues to drive the future in technology would not exist the way it does today.

The five elements that make a leader seen in class are very well reflected in Google’s corporate structure. Google wants their workforce to perform the best they can and will go a long way in order to provide the perfect environment in which each individual can thrive. Resilience is the “Ability to recover quickly from sickness, change or misfortune” but what does that mean in regards to employees and what does this mean for a company? In connection with a company such as Google resilience can be essential. Constant deadlines, however much fun the project might be, are stressful to most individuals at times and can lead to serious problems such as burnout. Other factors of stress besides deadlines include the need to optimize ones time keeping the 70/20/10 rule in mind and the temporality of living by this rule. In order to keep the workforce happy and well Google has adapted a unique approach, which is reflected in the Google working environment. There are a large range of faculties employees can use in order to deal with pressure; places where they can relax and recharge in order to be more efficient and resilient to every day challenges. Google facilities include sleeping pods, free food all around their campus, meditation classes, free use of Google vehicles and employees even get a free massage on their birthday. There is a one example of a Google employee that is very fitting in regards to resilience. He is an Googler Bill Duane, a software engineer, designed what he calls neutral self-hacking (a meditation class intro) at Google while he was leading a thirty person team and his father was struggling with a life threating disease.
