The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini, is a story about a young Sunni Muslim boy named Amir. Amir is shy, not very courageous, and likes to just do what he feels is right without getting in trouble. Amir lived with his father, Hassan, his maid (hazara), and Ali, Hassan’s dad. Hassan is the brave one, who makes sure that no one will hurt Amir and is not very well educated. The story first takes place in Kabul, Afghanistan. During his childhood, many events happen with will affect Amir in the future. Amir and Hassan would do everything together as childhood friends. They would talk, eat, play, and even make fun of neighbors. One thing that Amir didn’t like was when he was bullied by Assef. The kite tournament is one of the main rituals that Afghanistan follows. Every boy gets a kite, and try to cut the string of other kite. Amir paired up with Hassan, and led themselves to victory. Hassan said he will get Amir the game winning kite, as it is a ritual. Hassan reaches the kite but only to meet up with Assef. Assef tries to get the kite but Hassan denies him from it. Assef then physically abuses Hassan, as Amir finds him and just watches on. Another major event in Amir’s childhood was when Amir hides his expensive watch under Hassan’s bed so he can leave out of his troubles. Amir’s father then finds out that Hassan takes it, even though Amir hid it, and Hassan admits that he took it. This is when Ali, Hassan’s dad, says that they have to leave Kabul.
