To put more stress on the compulsion of humanism it is often camouflaged with an apparent stiffness or rudeness. We can search for this subtle form of humanism in the character of Buro Thhakrun, the mother of the Bhoumik family in Nilkanthha Pakhir Khonje. She is an old orthodox Hindu woman who likes to maintain so called customs and social norms very minutely and is very rigid regarding even the touch of Muslims. Yet, underneath her hard exterior, she has a heart to wish wellbeing for all in her village without any discrimination of community or class. She is full of affection, compassion and piety. She is a very interesting character still to be found in many joint old families in rural Bengal. The partition of India is said to be caused because of so many reasons. ‘Dhamma’ is a concept attached with non-violence, tolerance, sympathy, mercy and diligence. People in Bengal for a long time, are used to begin their day with a spontaneous remembrance of the messages of holy persons like Sree Chaitanya, Ma Sarada, Ramakrisna and Vivekananda. Their minds are naturally set against any atrocities or violence. They hesitate even to kill an ant. There is a strong belief in Gautam Buddha’s concept of next life and retaining of the results of the deeds of the present birth among the people of Bengal. They fear to do any ‘adhamma’ (unethical treatment) to anybody as he is sure to suffer for that in the next birth. They believe that religion is nothing but exercise of only good works. ‘Jibe daya’ or love for all creatures is the essence of all ‘Karma’ and selfless and honest karma is ‘dharma’ of all human on this
