JHave you ever been interested in trying to learn more about your family’s past? Yaa Gyasi’s novel Homegoing follows eight generations of people and their journey's in trying to find a truthful understanding of their past. A truthful understanding of the past for many people opens their eyes to the privileges they experience in contrast to the struggles their ancestors had before them. This leads them to let go of the narrowness of their own experiences to create a more meaningful future that they can be proud of. One can see this through the examples of the characters James, Marjorie, and Marcus.

From overcoming all odds, to the imprisonment of young kids as foot soldiers, literature allows us to explore the pinnacles and the lowest places of human society. Not all literature is necessarily true, but finding out the truth of the tale the author has chosen to share from their heart or imagination is what makes literature so intriguing. Ishmael Beah, a young man from Sierra Leone, shares his life experiences as a child soldier, how it was to be captured, to fight on the front lines, and the process of rehabilitation. On the other end, is a man who chose to be a soldier, Marcus Luttrell, member of SEAL team 10. Marcus Luttrell shows the great feats that the human body is capable of enduring.
Intended to be the narratee of the story of Sundiata, he ends up developing an unrestrained interest in it much to the surprise of his friends whose company he avoided, to the chagrin of his mother who was worried that he was losing appetite, and the consternation of his teacher who thought that he had drastically changed. The bright, studious and intelligent Mabo (26-28. 37-41), that was the pride of his mother as the only son, and the admiration of his teacher for his aptitude in mathematics, gets disenchanted with school and develops instead an unrestrained passion for a story in which he found more meaning and a sense of belonging. His ancestor was no longer a gorilla, as Evolution Theory was teaching him in school, but Maghan Kon Fatta, King of Mandé. This made the Sundiata story not only an epic of the society, but a story of Mabo’s roots.
He closed the book, sat it face down on the table in front of him and thought “Well that was complicated”. For Sebastian, Dasa Drndic’s book was not complicated in a sense of her sentence construction or word choice, but in its actual composition. As he found himself in one single page going from reading long unpronounceable German names, with small double columned paragraph descriptions (pg. 222) to being thrown into a full page interview of a Jewish victim (pg. 222). However, it was still more complicated than this for even the interviews were not always from Jewish victims, nor from people who were actually still alive. For some of the interviews were from dead German “S.S.- Untersharfuhrers”, much like is seen in “Otto Richard Horns” interview

Did you know that when in the process of creating graphic novels, illustrators use many specific details such as lines and shading to differentiate characters? , These details can symbolize way more than just another character and sometimes even convey a message that is really significant to the literature piece in order for a proper understanding of the author's main theme. With the use of graphic weight in the graphic novel Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi reinforces the distinct separation of the oppressed and the oppressors that can be easily muddled during war time, a distinction that was changed after the attacks on 9/11 and during the beginning of the war on terror. In doing so, Satrapi demonstrates the importance of ensuring people know about
