BUSINESS PROCESS MODELLING TECHNIQUES

INTRODUCTION
Every business consists of various activities going on simultaneously for different processes. Thus to streamline the flow of activities it is important to map those processes. This is where Business process modelling (BPM) comes into play. BPM is a technique which helps an organization to diagrammatically represent the flow of activities and events involved in a process along with the details of the activity/action owners. It is a cross-functional modelling technique which represents the workflow of more than one department of an organization. It sometimes even include the activities and processes of external organizations.

The most common type of it that are used are Colored Petri nets (CPN), they have a set of modules containing a network of place, and the symbols are differentiated with colors, thus making it very easy to understand the interaction of one process to another.
For most these techniques can be a bit complex for their needs, thus a simple alternative is used, known as Flowcharts, it just supports a sequential action flow by using a small set of standard symbols. It is its simplicity and powerful nature that makes it so popular among users.

Data Flow diagrams, represents the flow of data in a process. It shows the linkages of the process through the data stores and hot they relate to the user and their environment. They are mostly used in design documentation and are useful in organizing the raw data.

In change management it is very important to communicate as to what the change is all about and who is responsible for that change or who are the action owners. That is why business process modelling plays an important role in change management as every process improvement initiative involves some kind of change. Also, to introduce a new process in a system it is very important to map the system flow from start to end so that it is easier to implement the process and also to make people understand what the new process is all about and how things will be
