Families that are poor or have a low income are more likely to commit crimes for the purpose of their own needs to survive. “It is a fact that neighborhoods where the poor are concentrated are more prone to high crime rates, and poor residents are the most common victims of crimes” (1). The best explanation for this is that poorer people have the same needs as a regular middle-class citizen. The poor citizens need certain things to help him or her live a healthy life, such as healthcare, food stamps, and more employment options. One may argue that healthcare is too expensive and that food stamps have been taken away from many people.
According to Dr. Lustig, fructose is a major threat to the well being of people because it is an economic evil. Fructose is extremely inexpensive to produce, especially in large quantities, and is used in most foods we eat today. Avoidance of fructose consequently becomes difficult and majority of the population then ingests excessive amounts of the sugar. Metabolization of fructose causes the suppression of the effects of ghrelin and slows stimulation of insulin and leptin. Since the biochemical processes that involve ghrelin, insulin, and leptin are compromised the feeling of hunger doesn’t seem to leave or the sense of being full doesn’t appear.
South Los Angeles is referred to consistently as a point of reference to represent a community or region that deals with these types of hardships. This specific region was chosen strategically by the author because it serves as a well-known area possessing multicultural and impoverished characteristics. It is discussed that areas such as this one lack the opportunities to buy healthy foods because corporations that offer cheap, unhealthy foods to the consumer are densely populated within them. One of the biggest health problems and dangers in America is sugar consumption. Many people consume sugar well beyond their suggested intake. This module addressed environmental issues that contribute to health, including overpopulation, consumerism, and wealth inequalities. People of all classes are affected by this issue in different ways; for example, the poor experience limited availability of healthy foods, and the rich consume a lot of resources. My favorite class activity was coming up with mental models related to the video “Wealth Inequality in America,” because it gave me insight on how the poor eat unhealthily based on circumstances that may be out of their control, not necessarily from personal choice as many people commonly assume. This health topic is a problem because the people in the most industrialized countries consume so much more resources that they don’t actually
