The family is always trying to stay silent and keep their secrets. During the choir performance, Draper Doyle decides to lip-sync all the songs. This is significant, as Draper Doyle’s silence symbolizes how although some members of the Ryan family may try to open their mouths and reveal the truth, no words will come out.
He enjoyed it alone” (Berrios). His humbleness was so great that the media did not know of a Nicaraguan boy who was without legs and had parents who could not provide prosthetics for him due to the dictator of Nicaragua during that time, Anastasio Somoza. (Didion 108)” In this reference, Didion is making a figurative connection between the difference in sounds and morality. The ability of not being able to hear the elders sing a prayer may refer to a lack of conformity to the social code. Thus, she references, that she can only hear “Baby the Rain Must Fall”, which was a rock and roll song, that seems to symbolize unconformity, and independence from the social code.

By watching his mom stand up to people of a higher, privileged class, Jason is meant to be inspired to reject torment from the ‘elite’ of his own grade school microcosm(the bullies). Though rocky at the start of the novel, the relationship between Jason and his sister Julia develops with the plot and, upon conclusion, she also reveals herself as a role model and advocate of Jason’s “Inside-You”. A beautiful exemplar for Jason, Julia refuses to let the popular beliefs of others
