The role of a career counsellor in the career counselling process is to facilitate a successful transition of the client from one stage of their life to another whether it be from university to entering the working world or when the client has built up a considerable amount of experience and they feel they now need something more challenging. According to Egan (1998) there are four stages that are considered in the role of the career counselling in the workplace. If this support is provided to the staff, then there would be less problems and people would also become less resistant to further changes. This means that they would be ready and would accept any changes made in the future.
Focus 2 Assignment – Reflection Upon completing the Focus 2 career assessment program, I am quite impressed at the quality of information it presents. It allowed me to not only look at careers that would fit my personality, but also those that take into consideration the fields I am already interested in. Also, as with any form of self-assessment, there were strengths and weaknesses that I did not expect based on how I feel I live my life currently. Beginning chronologically, the program had me complete two subjective, current measures of my professional career.
Bethany Hill once stated, “Every child you pass in the hall has a story that needs to be heard, maybe you are the one that needs to hear it.” That quote works because the person might have trouble at home and they might need a counselor to almost let a burden off of their shoulders and tell their story to. Some of the reasons Career Cruising chose being a school counselor for me because I like training and teaching, working with children and providing advice. When I complete all of my schoolings I would like to become a behavioral disorder counselor. Like other professions in the mental health field and helping professions, counseling typically attracts those who are imbued with a need to help others, to make a difference in others’ lives, the community around them and sometimes even the world. There are many facets to a counselor and to counseling, some of which take on personal attributes such as personality, the values and beliefs held by counselors, and what they perceive their role in the counseling profession to be. Other facets involve ethical considerations in therapy, the importance of the profession, the value and process of change, important counseling practices and the value of necessary self-care a counselor ought to engage in. Additionally, as a counselor, it is important to be genuine with whatever feedbacks one presents to the patient and what one believes regarding the situation of the client. Mrs. Perez believes the more authentic and genuine he is with her patients, the more help he will be able to offer the clients. As a counselor, it is important to have a fine and professional interaction with one 's client but boundaries must be maintained. Through this, a counselor is able to demonstrate their focus on helping the patients by showing the client that they understand their problems. As I regard my client as a person I cared about, I might be easily to get influence by my client emotions. This in turn may cause me to be subjective rather than objective as a counsellor. Nevertheless, to not be affected by the emotional issue, I must have high self-awareness with better understanding of myself. It is important to have counsellors to regularly examine their own issues and hone their counselling skills to prevent their personal biases from interfering with their counselling session. In such case, to have an effective counselling, certain strategies could be used.
Mitchell and Krumboltz (2012) also argues that a barrier to set goals and to make satisfying choices is to have irrational believes about certain aspects such as career choices and development. Amundson (2009) suggest that clients need to identify these irrational beliefs to move past them and it is therefore important for the career counsellor to help clients identify them. According to the career decision-making theory, the primary focus of decision making and career development is learning through experiences and human interaction (Mitchell & Krumboltz, 2012). Over the past one and half month, the class of PDE 502 (Counselling and Career Education) has taught me some major lessons for life in dealing with the clients in response to their emotional needs. The role of a counsellor is not unlike that of a friend where by it is nurtured by being in each other’s company, talking over everyday issues and sharing feelings.
