The role of a career counsellor in the career counselling process is to facilitate a successful transition of the client from one stage of their life to another whether it be from university to entering the working world or when the client has built up a considerable amount of experience and they feel they now need something more challenging.

According to Egan (1998) there are four stages that are considered in the role of the career counselling in the workplace. Stage one is described as analysing the current state of affairs, stage two is identifying the preferred scenario, stage three is planning developmental activities and stage four is evaluating the outcomes.

This is typically based on the outcomes of stage one and the various options available are discussed with the client. In terms of career planning, one would typically explore skills and goals, consider career paths, know the organisation and provide self-development direction. Career development support looks at recruitment, benefits, managing potential and development. Support of performance management and development is done through identifying key duties, improving capacities, planning work objectives and assessing performance. The lead team’s core responsibilities require them to provide core services to the sectors identified in the framework. Some of the responsibilities include the individuals to develop policies, fund models and build relationships with relevant parties in order to render services to the various different sectors involved (DHET & SAQA, 2012).

When one considers the career counselling process, emphasis needs to be placed on the environment in which the counselling process will take place. The behaviour that is displayed by the career counsellor will either depict a warm and welcoming atmosphere or a cold and clinical type of environment. Coetzee (2016) emphasised that career counsellors need to address five basic emotional needs in order for them to obtain an atmosphere that is conducive to a positive impact. The five basic emotional needs are discussed in more detail below.

Psychological Safety is the first emotional need and this translates into the candidate feeling safe and secure in the counselling environment. If a client feels safe and secure, they are more likely to open up and apply themselves to the task at
