Section 1: Professional Development Plan For most of my life I have been motivated to help people so when I made the decision to continue my education at Walden University, I knew that I was ready for the journey. I am currently seeking a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and I am expected to graduate in the winter of 2025. Case mangers helping those with mental illness can help assess clients to see where they are at and what services they are in need of. Then they can make any necessary referrals to other agencies that may benefit the client, help the client fill out paperwork to get insurance if they don’t have any, and also help connect clients to services in their area that help them meet their daily living needs. Therapists can help diagnosis their clients, teach their clients ways to cope with their illness, and help them work through anything that may be troubling them, giving them the necessary skills to live their day to day life without letting their illness interfere with their life. Psychiatrists also help those with mental illness by prescribing them any necessary medications for their illness that will help them live as much of a normal life as possible, and that will be able to help them maintain day to day living.

For this interview assignment, I got the opportunity to interview Jeff Gatlin, MS, LPC, Senior Clinician and Assistant Director at UTSA Counseling Services. Additionally, Jeff recently earned his supervisor title and is now an LPC-S. Jeff talked about becoming interested in counseling first and foremost because he needed a career, and he desired a profession that allowed him to have financial stability, independence, and professional flexibility. When I complete all of my schoolings I would like to become a behavioral disorder counselor. This career is for me because I love helping people, I want to help people better understand themselves so they can overcome their problems, and the human brain and the thought process has always been a huge interest to me. Is has always been a goal in my life to be somewhere in the healthcare field working, and this is the area that intrigues me and always keeps me interested. A potential career I have always been interested in would have to be teaching. I enjoy working with people and especially teaching people new things. I have always admired some teachers, but some on the other hand, they just never sparked my interests.
