For most collegiate athletes, sports is a way of life and self fulfillment. Competitive athletics are their passion and protective shell from the stresses or uncertainty of the working world (Erpic, Wylleman & Zupancic, 2004). An athletes sports career is defined as “the multiyear sports activities of the individual aimed at high level sports achievements and self-improvement in sports (European Federation of Sport Psychology, 2000). However, this is not a homogenous entity according to Erpic et al but is composed of several stages. Each stage, including sports career transition and adaptation to post-sports life, is characterized by a set of specific demands requiring adjustment by athletes and has therefore comprehended as a transition. Career transition produces dramatic changes in athletes’ lives that can result in uncertainty, upheaval, and strong emotional reactions (Taylor & Wilson, 2005).

This study represents a grounded theory investigation of how motivation and self-perceptions influence students’ emotions, cognitions, and behaviors by focusing on student-athletes, individuals who may experience conflicting sets of motivation and self issues. From observing and interviewing nine student-athletes at a Research 1 university, we developed a process model relating themes to the students’ experiences. In the model, the relationship between motivation and the self within the domains of academics and athletics was described as a motivational sense of self. Each student experienced the process represented in the model in his or her own unique and contextually specific way; however, commonalities among the students’ experiences also were seen and resulted in the description of five types of student
