For most collegiate athletes, sports is a way of life and self fulfillment. Competitive athletics are their passion and protective shell from the stresses or uncertainty of the working world (Erpic, Wylleman & Zupancic, 2004). An athletes sports career is defined as “the multiyear sports activities of the individual aimed at high level sports achievements and self-improvement in sports (European Federation of Sport Psychology, 2000). However, this is not a homogenous entity according to Erpic et al but is composed of several stages. Each stage, including sports career transition and adaptation to post-sports life, is characterized by a set of specific demands requiring adjustment by athletes and has therefore comprehended as a transition. Career transition produces dramatic changes in athletes’ lives that can result in uncertainty, upheaval, and strong emotional reactions (Taylor & Wilson, 2005).
Nowadays in the Philippines, sports has become prominent, especially in the collegiate level. Major leagues like the University

This study represents a grounded theory investigation of how motivation and self-perceptions influence students’ emotions, cognitions, and behaviors by focusing on student-athletes, individuals who may experience conflicting sets of motivation and self issues. From observing and interviewing nine student-athletes at a Research 1 university, we developed a process model relating themes to the students’ experiences. In the model, the relationship between motivation and the self within the domains of academics and athletics was described as a motivational sense of self. Each student experienced the process represented in the model in his or her own unique and contextually specific way; however, commonalities among the students’ experiences also were seen and resulted in the description of five types of student
Every freshman in college has to adjust to being away from home, learning the college system and making new friends. However, for a college athlete it’s more than just learning to become a college student. As we read, for a college athlete, they are facing daily routines that include hours of practice and games that take a toll on the players emotionally and physically. Athletes have overwhelming demands on their time and talent that cause them isolation from the typical college social scene. It was discovered that being a college athlete meant that they had to relinquish some part of themselves, that personal independence that they had taken as a given of their social self (page 183).
Sports seem to be a major distraction for academics and is seen as more important than academics; a large portion of students may not be involved in sports and their gateway into a postsecondary institution may be through their academics and how well they have been
The author suggests that because not all college athletes are on scholarship, many of them still have to be employed to be able to pay for their college. Therefore, the author argues that while playing a collegiate sport, a full time job in itself, many athletes have to work another job on top of it. The article suggests that with compensation, this problem, along with many other problems including ending corruption and increasing motivation to play, can be
Naturally, when an athlete’s season is in session the focus on academics can shift and start to deteriorate. If they also are awarded an additional salary, then academics will become the least important factor during their years in
The Students of America Need Your Help Athletes can not go out and play without proper training and their equipment such as cleats or a jersey and with that in mind, how can students face the world without the proper preparation and tools. This is exactly what authors, Donald S Miller and Thomas E Slocombe, are effectively arguing in their article “Preparing Students for the New Reality”. The article is about the discussion of cultural changes in the United States leading to a declining student performance thus leaving them unprepared to properly face the new competitive workforce, also known as the new reality. In their article, Donald S Miller and Thomas E Slocombe successfully argue that students are ill-equipped to face the new world and
Out of high school, many students receive scholarships to follow their passion of playing sports; these college athletes take on the responsibility of being a leader to their universities and their team. Student athletes should view playing sports as an addition to completing their studies, not a replacement. Many believe student athletes should solely focus on bettering their “game” in order to make it to the professional sports league. While this is important, student athletes should also be expected to go above and beyond with their actions in and out of the classroom. College athletes should be held accountable for their education as well as their behavior, by both them-selves and their coaches.
Should Collegiate Athletes Be Introduced to a Pay Grade? Due to the many amenities collegiate athletes already receive, such as special registration for classes, large scholarships, and thousands of dollars each in terms of travel and team expenses, student-athletes should not be paid. While many college sports supporters feel college athletes should be referred to in the same interest as big-time professional athletes due to their experience and the difficulty of performing well in their specific sport, a more in-depth perspective needs to be taken on the subject. Student-athletes attending college spend a great amount of time devoted to their individual sport, but even though they spend immense amounts of time working to get better on
The article highlights the exploitation of college athletes, who often generate millions of dollars in revenue for their universities but receive little compensation and face significant barriers to academic success. The demands of sports, such as long hours of practice and travel, can make it difficult for student athletes to prioritize their education and may students will start to fall behind their fellow classmates and not have a chance to pass the class or even graduate on time. Additionally, the article notes that many student athletes come from disadvantaged backgrounds and lack the resources and support systems necessary to excel academically. When given an opportunity to compete in college as an athlete many of these kids forget that they still have to participate in school and coming from their background as struggling students itll be even harder for them to learn in the college environment. If they struggled from elementary to high school there is a little chance that they will be able to be above average in college and without the money or help given by the school it makes it even worse.
Being an athlete takes raw talent, drive and time management in a busy life. Throughout my career as an athlete at Sutton Memorial high school I have participated in some of the most demanding sports including cross country indoor and outdoor track. Being on these teams for over six years I have had the honor of seeing legends rise and fall. Athletics are important but academics are still crucial to my future, and my secondary education. I have recently been accepted and admitted to Bryant university to enroll in their accounting/ CPA program to complete my interests in business and enable my future career as an accountant.
Sports have been a part of America for a long time. Long enough that they are big part of American’s culture. When the word “sports” is mentioned to any American, the first thing that comes to mind are sports at a professional level, mean while forgetting the National Collegiate Athletic Association(NCAA) athletes. Surprisingly, America has the unique value of being able to play sports on a high level while going to college. No other country has that privilege.
On the other hand, many people may think that student athletes shouldn’t be required to have a higher G.P.A than 2.0 because it hurts the players, the team, and the school as a whole. According to the article Pro/Con: Should students be required to meet academic standards to play on Blair sports teams? , it states that, “Because of the hectic schedule that athletics demand, it can be difficult for some students to meet the academic standard. Many teams practice two hours each day, five days a week.” Many athletic teams practice two hours a day five times a week and this will limit the time one can spend on academics.(Sebastian-Tayac)
“The culture of college sports may inhibit some student-athletes from seeking help to address issues such as anxiety, depressive symptoms, burnout, the stress of team or individual expectations, and the everyday stress of dealing with relationships, academic demands, and life away from home” (McQuade, 2021). The demand on student-athletes is tremendous. The need to perform in front of hundreds of thousands of people in order to bring success to their school’s name does not allow much room for relaxation. These sports teams require many hours throughout the week to practice and prepare for games that will be nationally televised. This extra time commitment causes student athletes to lose study and social time.
“Student athlete,” we all have heard the phrase and for some it might apply, but truly how hard is it to be a student athlete. For years students have complained about homework, due dates, and test because they all claim to not have the time and that is because they go to practice six out of the seven days of the week. According to the University of Penn State, and Travis Vogan, a professor at the University of Iowa, “Recognized that “an athlete’s education options are limited.” Due to daily practices, meetings, workouts, and
Have you wondered why many athletes who deal with serious problems, seem to succeed? Their success is mostly the result of a the sport psychologist, who is working with them to improve their mental state. Sport psychologists take a caring approach on personal and public matters. Studies have shown the various outcomes of using a sport psychologist, in many different sports. This is why there is usually a person behind the athlete in any sport, whether it is a sport psychologist and or a role model.
In life, people will experience different things that will have an influence on who they are as well as who they will become. These experiences are in direct correlation to future success. Some believe that most of these experiences are outside of one 's own control, such as where he was born, where he goes to school or even a financial situation. While this makes sense, there is one thing that is within one 's control that will greatly increase the likelihood of one 's achievements. Playing sports in high school has a positive impact on future success.
