Originally from Austria, Sigmund Freud was a trained neurologist who was particularly interested in the human psyche. Over many years, Freud developed a theory to explain human behavior, what we refer to now as “Freudian Psychology.” First, he divided the mind into three levels, and used the analogy of an iceberg to help others understand it. The Jungian archetype was first introduced by Carl Gustav Jung, a psychiatrist at the University of Zurich, who with Sigmund Fred explored the unconscious of the human psyche. Jung came to believe that there is a shadow behind a person mind and Freud disagreed to such idea and rather say that it was just the limbo. Although their friendship did not last that long, Jung came up with an idea in which believed that universal, mythic characters live within the collective unconscious of people over world. These type of archetypes can be seen in the short stories of Edgar Allan Poe In the short story, “The Fall of the House of Usher” by Edgar Allan Poe, it shows quite a few Jungian archetypes throughout the story.

Freud earned his degree in medicine at the University of Vienna in 1881, and then did research on cerebral palsy, aphasia and microscopic neuroanatomy at the Vienna General Hospital. He then became a professor in 1902.

One individual in particular, Carl Jung, created the concept of analytic psychology (Engler, 2014). Analytic psychology focuses on the importance of psychological thought processes such as thoughts, feelings, sensations, and wishes, as well as a person’s determination to find themselves. Jung was able to describe a person’s psychological type by emphasizing his focus on how a person views the world and how they react in different situations. Jung categorizes these perceptions and actions by attitudes and functions. The two basic attitudes were extraversion and introversion, and the four functions were sensation, intuition, thinking, and feeling.

As defined in the Psychology: Perspectives and Connections textbook, “psychology is the scientific study of thought and behavior” (Feist & Rosenberg, 2011). The two psychologists that have impacted society with their concepts and who are going to be explored in this paper are Erik Erikson and Sigmund Freud. They are two well-known psychologists that have both contributed to the field of psychology and, like most psychologists, have originated from different backgrounds. In this case, their early life and careers have laid the foundation for their path towards the contribution of their theories and concepts to science.

Psychoanalysis was first introduced by Sigmund Freud and is now known as classical psychoanalysis. The theory, as defined by Sigmund Freud, is the dynamic between underlying forces that determine behavior and personality. He stressed the importance of human sexuality, childhood experiences, and the unconscious processes. However, his theory was seen as misogynistic and narrow focused. Consequently, classical psychoanalysis was criticized and rejected by many scholars.

Sigmund Freud is Psychology’s most famous psychoanalysis. His work and theories have helped shape our views of personality, levels of consciousness and unconsciousness mind, the structure of personality and the development of personality.
