Carl Koller can be accredited with the first medical use of Cocaine. Koller was in search of a drug that he could use during ophthalmic surgeries. He had tried many other agents before cocaine, which included chloral, bromide and morphine. These were unsuccessful because they lead to retching, vomiting, and restlessness. Sigma Freud who was a colleague of Koller, was trying to break a morphine habit of a young physiologist by using cocaine. Sigma Freud then asked Koller to assist him in experiments to find out the physiologic systemic effects of cocaine. The experiments were conducted and the results led to Koller discovering the value of cocaine as a local anesthetic. Koller instilled a solution of cocaine and dropped a few drops in the eyes of animals. …show more content…
After discovering its anesthetic effects Koller wrote a paper and was ready to explain his discovery at a conference in Germany. He was eager to show the world his findings, but he was unable to attend the Ophthalmological Congress in Heidelberg because the travel expenses where far too great. He instead asked a colleague of his named Josef Brettauer to read his paper and demonstrate his findings. During his demonstration Josef dropped a few drops of a cocaine solution into a canines left eye and waited a few minutes for its effects to kick in. After he was sure the cocaine was working, Josef lunged his forceps towards the dog’s eyes. The dog’s right eye responded to this stimulation and blinked while the left eye was unaffected. Josef then went even further and touched the dog’s left eye with his forceps. The dog did not flinch and the demonstration was a success (Markel 85-86). After cocaine’s success as a local anesthetic for ophthalmology, it was further used in other surgeries such as laryngeal surgery (“Carl”
Besides the success cocaine brought Coca cola, news articles in the late 1880’s were full of promise and enthusiasm when regarding cocaine. One articled claimed that “no modern remedy has been received by the profession (of medicine) with such enthusiasm, none has become so rapidly popular, so scarcely any one has shown so extensive a field of useful application as cocaine” (Iron County Register). Newspapers even began publishing articles that used Freud and Hammond as their sources, claiming that cocaine “is unquestionably of very great value and entirely harmless” (The McCook
I found that there were facts that seemed unbelievable. For example the fact that cocaine was widely used in medications for adults and children. The last question was easy considering my parents told me the story about how coke-cola was made. The ingredient of cocaine was used to give the consumer pleasure and an added addiction to sell more products. 2.
Doctors used insulin to put the subjects into a coma. They thought it was good because it put the mind to rest. By the end of it all 44 people ended up dying from it, due to the procedure being unsafe (Mental: A History of the Madhouse). Another form of treatment was using tranquilizing drugs. Using tranquilizers was suppose to calm patients down, but instead it was giving subjects the effects of parkinson’s disease: hand tremors, muscle rigidness, and impaired speech (Mental: A History of the
The Torture Lab: Regression or Torture? Naomi Klein in the chapter, The Torture Lab discusses the effect of shock therapy in humans and the economy. Klein looks further into the effects of psychiatric shock therapy and experiments conducted on people without their consent. Cameron’s theory was that shocking his patients would bring them into a blank state where everything before was wiped away.
According to a newly published review of decades of archaeological research, humans worldwide have been using psychoactive substances since prehistoric times. What started with the fermentation of wild berries and collecting mushrooms filled with psilocybin has now evolved to one of humanities biggest industries. Pharmaceutical companies spend millions of dollars each year on the research and development of pills, while at the same time a college student using household chemicals is making his own substance in his dorm room. Students, servers, doctors, soldiers, lawyers, politicians, parents, artists, teachers, police officers, fire fighters, and judges were all participants in Baker’s series. Showcasing the diversity of those who have the
Introduction Written and published in 2008 by Paul Gootenberg, History professor and Latin American studies at University of New York at Stony Brook, “Andean Cocaine: The Making of a Global drug” retraces the pivotal stages of the illicit cocaine trafficking, starting from the boundless coca fields in Latin America to the chemistry laboratories in Europe up until the streets of U.S. cities. The aim of this book review is to provide the reader with a short but detailed insight of what is the main content of the book, by paying particular attention to its structure, objectivity and style. Scope & Organisation Adopting a meticulous chronological approach, Gootenberg describes the infamous and complex untold history of cocaine, analysing and
Later on, health officials began to call cocaine an “epidemic.” Even after the death of comedian John Belushi in 1982, Americans have not been phased, and continued to use cocaine and the use of it still continued to rise. A growing amount of scientific literature showed us the addictive and fatal effects of cocaine. Many movies started portraying actors using cocaine like in the 1985 movie St. Elmo’s Fire. Later, cocaine use started to become an issue in high schools even though treatment centers started to increase in America.
The hospital only allowed Dr. Sawyer to attempt this on one patient as a test, Leonard Lowe was chosen to be the test subject. Leonard had been diagnosed with sleeping disorder ever since he was a small boy, he had been asleep for 30 years before given L-Dopa. Dr, Sawyer gave Leonard L-Dopa and after many hours he awoke. He was able to walk, talk, and do everything such as a normal person could. The drug was able to awaken all the patients with the disease for a short amount of time.
Both drugs are stimulants so they stimulate the individual and create an euphoric high, as a result of the way both drugs elevate the dopamine levels in the brain. Stimulants such as cocaine and meth cause the user to be more active, talkative, alert, less tired, exhilarated, etc. This essay will talk about each drug signs and symptoms treatment nursing management for drug abuse. Cocaine is an extremely addictive and poisonous drug and is a central nervous system stimulant (Miller-Keane).
Now, I held a personal vendetta against the dessert. With a furrowed brow, I reluctantly agreed to the doctor’s advice of “sitting in a dark room and staring at the wall” in order to recover. Yet upon arriving back at my home after the appointment, my hands instinctively reached for the book perched

‘Steven, my gardener mixed cocaine with my everyday diet for about a month. I feared that I would die of slow-poisoning very soon. Once I overheard his conversation with Adam, the one who supplied cocaine to him. That very night, I got a mild heart attack. I didn’t inform anyone because; I didn’t wish to put their lives into risk.
Many times C.I.A agents would sit in a room hidden behind a two way mirror and drink cocktails while watching the drugs take effect. They would listen to the conversations with recording devices hidden disguised as electrical outlets. One agent infamous for watching so much was White himself. White was so consumed by his curiosity to know if the experiments would be a success that he regularly sat in a room sitting on a toilet drinking cocktails because he didn’t want to miss a moment. According to History.com White wrote a letter to Gottlieb that stated “Of course I was a very minor missionary, actually a heretic, but I toiled wholeheartedly in the vineyards because it was fun, fun, fun.
These are few examples of many who were using these drugs and helped them in performing better in their
