For the past two years, I have been involved in the Carmax Cares community service month. We provided assistance to the Foster Care Support Foundation in Roswell, Georgia. This organization sends out gently worn closes, shoes and other necessities to support foster care providers in the state of Georgia. We packaged items to be sent out and organized their warehouse inventory. On campus I am an active member of SABAC as well as the Georgia Club.
In 2007, I, along with a few of my peers, founded the Little Lemon Drop Jr. Guild as a way to give back to our community. Since then, this nonprofit organization has raised thousands of dollars that has gone to support uncompensated care at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Throughout my middle school and high school years, I have been very involved with this group. When I had the opportunity to choose a service placement for this year, I immediately knew I would be doing my service through the Little Lemon Drop Jr. Guild because of my previous involvement with the guild and my passion for the cause the guild supports.

I agree with you Carmesha, I looked into to both websites and mainly men of Caucasian and African American descent were represented. I was surprised to see the lack of representation of other ethnic groups and women. Also, there was no older and disabled pictured on the website at all that I could find. I was surprised by this because we all wear shoes and I thought it would have every group represented.
I currently work in the mental health field as the Director of Admissions. I have worked in this field for ten years. Most of that time was spent in what is known as “direct care” and for five years I was in a management role. The work is very difficult with a very high turnover and burnout rate. One of the main issues within the industry is the loss staff, which is usually due to job dissatisfaction.
The child I took care of was born with Down-Syndrome and it was my job to help him with his homework and other daily obstacles he might have. Another family I worked with had daughter (she was 4 years old) who also has Down-Syndrome. I got help potty train her and help her with her ABC’s. For this service-learning project, I decided to volunteer at Meals on Wheels in Rocky Mount. Meals on Wheels is a nonprofit organization that deliver meals to individuals at home that are unable to purchase or prepare their own meals. My grandmother who volunteers with them every Tuesday first introduced me to the program 10 years ago. Kara is a family friend who is the Director of Development for Meals on Wheels. She helped me get the volunteering opportunity.
I volunteered at Lenoir Memorial Hospital the Summer of 2015. I received about 58 hours of community service. Ms. Ann Durusky is the Director of Volunteer Services at the hospital. Volunteering at the hospital entails admitting and discharging patients from their rooms, escorting patients or guests to where they need to be, delivering emails, flowers, and gift baskets. At first, I was sent with the lead volunteer of our group and a partner, until I was able to remember what procedures to take in different situations.
I provide for my familial community by being a major financial contributor in my family. Also, my country, Dominican Republic is severely poor. Recently I got the chance to go to Dominican Republic and my family and myself round up many toys, snacks, and books to give to children. We cook a large meal and go to one of the poorest parts of the country: Hospedaje Yaque, Santiago de los Caballeros. In this annual event we give poor children and families a meal, many toys, books, and things that they need for survival.
The last three clinical weeks at the Long Term Care Facility have provided me with real life situations to enforce the SILC clinical skills and improve my therapeutic communication. This experience has helped shaped me as a professional by allowing me to develop essential skills that contribute to the holistic care of nursing. A significant improvement that I developed following this experience included my assessment skills during every resident interaction. During these resident encounters, I began to address the resident’s overall well-being and comfort rather than just the current problem. I started incorporating questions about pain, how the resident slept at night, their current mood, and many other questions addressing the resident’s status as a whole.
In the beginning of the early 1990’s Porsche faced a severe problem. After orders decreased to 30% from 1986 to 1993 the company was on the verge of bankruptcy. The loss of almost 240 Mio. DM was so far the biggest in the company’s history. Porsche’s day as an independent luxury car company seemed to be over.
