Carnival is a festival originally founded within Roman Catholicism. Its roots are estimated to go back to the 10th century. Believed is that it is a descendant of an ancient Italian custom. ‘The word ‘carnival’ derives from the Latin carnem levare, meaning to put away flesh or meat.’(Gill, 1998) Initially carnival was celebrated in the days leading up to Shrove Tuesday. Shrove Tuesday is the night forty days in advance of Easter, if Sundays are not included. For this reason, carnival is celebrated on different days each year; the Sunday can take place as early as the 1st of February and as late as the 9th of March. Before the lent began, people ate all the fat in the house for the simple reason that forty days later the fat will be rotten, therefore Shrove Tuesday is also known as Fat Tuesday. The reason for the Lent is to commemorate the time Jesus supposedly spent in the desert. Nowadays carnival is celebrated in a lot of different countries, though most of the time it is restricted to certain areas. Obviously, in a few areas the celebration is more prominently recognised than in others. Originally they only celebrated it on the original dates, although the commemoration had been stretched out over the years. Every town will change its name during Carnaval, for instance Den Bosch becomes Oeteldonk, Eindhoven transforms into Lampegat and Noordwijkerhout renames itself to Kokkerhout. With the different name comes a different mayor, who will get the proverbial ‘key to the city’. This person is titled Prins Carnaval, and is chosen at the 11th of the 11th at 11:11 p.m., the reason for the selection being at this particular date and time it due to fact that the number eleven is traditionally seen as the number of fools and madmen and also indirectly links to the imperfection of the number because it comes before the ‘holy’ number

In comparison to the carnival, the Olympics is the complete opposite, representing the Apollonian qualities of man. The Olympics flourish on order, schedule, and timeliness. Holidays celebrate an area’s culture and/or the day(s) it commemorates with various festivities and traditions. In Theodore Geisel’s How The Grinch Stole Christmas, the light-hearted denizens of Who-Ville are preparing to celebrate Christmas. For the Whos, it is a time of fun and merryness, in which they sing and play with one another. This is a time of camaraderie and fellowship between everyone in the town. Apart from this is the antagonist, the Grinch, who dreads the holiday along with the singing, feasting, and other festive activities that the holiday inspires.
People came from all over to celebrate the many nights of the festa (Orsi). The festa began July 16th and went on for hours and hours for about a week (Orsi). People offered gifts and prayers to the Madonna throughout the festa. The streets of the festa were swimming with barefoot immigrants huddled in the July heat in front of the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, the smell of delicious food, and giant artifacts like tall candles and a large decorated float (Orsi). The street festival was a way they could share their culture with others in it.

The Day of the Dead and Halloween are alike in many ways. During the Day of the Dead, people dress in costumes and celebrate their dead loved ones returning to them. Similarly, on Halloween, people also dress in costumes and go “Trick or Treating”. Both holidays also come from Catholic roots, and believe the veil between the living and dead worlds is thinnest on these days. During the Day of the Dead celebrations, people cook, eat, and have a party, similar to what others do on Halloween.
At a time when African workers had gained their freedom and were able to gain position in the structural class, yet in an era still dominated by white supremacy. The Indian and Chinese entered as the newest indentured workers, and were referred to as a ‘Coolie’, an all too similar name as ‘Nigger’, to the African (Prashad, 72-75). An example of how polyculturalism can be exhibited was through the celebration of Hosay, the death of Hussain, grandson of Muhammad (Prashad, 79). The carnival celebration brought together the Chinese and Africans indentures of the Caribbean. Moreover, it is a celebration led to a natural blending of two cultures through the enjoyment of the others tradition.
