This political cartoon was indirectly terrorizing the opposing nations alongside boosting people's morals to join the military. Encouraging people to join the military gave countries a better chance at winning.
The use of visual cues is an effective way to communicate a particular message to a desired audience. Both text and picture in a political cartoon, or a real life image, can be used to present commentary on a particular political situation. For instance, a political cartoon illustrates Ted Cruz on an island alone with a boat driving away with the wording “GOP Support,” to display the lack of support he gets from fellow Republicans. Furthermore, the article “Obnoxiousness is the New Charisma” written by Frank Bruni, presents an unflattering picture of Ted Cruz with his fist up and a blurred out mouth. Since both these images are anti-Cruz, they are targeted towards an audience who feels similarly towards him, whether conservative or liberal.
Political cartoons allow cartoonists to graphically comment on controversial political issues and events in society. As an abundance of these cartoons are purposely illustrated in a humorous manner, their focal purpose is not only amuse but to ensure the impression conveyed by the cartoonist challenges the audiences’ perception on the issue presented. David Rowe’s cartoon, which appeared in the Australian Financial Review magazine on November 10th 2013, condemns the Tony Abbott government’s implementation of the military operation dubbed "Operation Sovereign Borders" on the “Stop the Boats" policy. This political movement has therefore, limits access to information relating to the issue to the public and media. Through the use of key satirical devices, particularly: caricature, symbolism, visual metaphors, analogy and captioning David Rowe has negatively displayed the Abbott Government’s apathetic attempt to drip feed Australians information of its asylum seeker stand-off with Indonesia.
The decision of the image’s creator to incorporate this global issue into everyday aspects of individual lifestyles is what successfully achieves his emotional appeals. Humorists, such as cartoonists, satirical writers, and stand-up comics, often base their work on current events and issues. They never fail to put a twist on their subject, making it easier to digest and understand; therefore, they make the subject more appealing to otherwise uninterested or repulsed people. Albeit the fact that a large part of the public may be misinformed in response to the humorist’s twist on the message, humorists are able to state directly what news articles cannot by shedding light on a subject, by talking about controversial issues, or by merely giving busy people the ability to catch up on current eventualities in the short window of time they have. Many humorists shed light on heavy subjects by making them more pleasing and entertaining for the audience; whilst doing so, they can also often provide the audience with valuable information. The cartoonists that work for Charlie Hebdo often use satirical cartoons to convey a deep message.
During the 1860’s, there was tremendous tension between immigrants and Americans in the United States. To portray this “tension”, a political cartoon that was drawn by an unknown cartoonist to depict that America’s culture was in danger. This political cartoon is called “The Great Fear of the Period That Uncle Sam May be Swallowed by Foreigners: The Problem Solved” and was published in San Francisco, California by White & Bauer. As a whole, political cartoons can heavily influence society in multiple ways. The press has always expressed their views/opinions about politics in clever ways, and these cartoons are only one of
Saving the Modern World: One Satire at a Time There are so many problems that the world faces today, some more urgent than others. Some individuals choose to focus on the newest fashion style or celebrity breakup rather than focus on one that could bring about the doom of a nation. The use of satire in great literary works, television entertainment, and comics is an effective way to enlighten the world on the difficulties it faces.
In American society, the advent of the political cartoon allowed for the general population to talk about taboo or relevant topics whilst still being entertained. Decades later, various forms of media and stand-up comedians incorporate prevalent issues into their comedy, ultimately allowing for the American people to be informed and to communicate about some of the most important issues of their time. Some newer forms of media, such as SNL and the Colbert Report, use comedy and satire to portray a different, more important agenda. For instance, the Colbert Report recently produced a satire bit in his show called The Hungry For Power Games. In it, he compares The Hunger Games to the Presidential race.
