Blackburn v. Golden and District Search and Rescue, RCMP, and Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. By: Austin Pigeon March 2017 Part 1: In the case between Gilles Blackburn (plaintiff) and Golden Search and Rescue, RCMP, and Kicking Horse Mountain Resort (defendants), Blackburn took the three defendants to the BC Supreme Court and sued each of them for negligence for not commencing a rescue, which lead to the death of his wife, Marie-Josée Fortin (Petrovics, 2011). Blackburn claims that between February 17 and 21, 2009, all three of the defendants were aware of SOS signals Blackburn had stomped into the snow in the mountains surrounding Golden, British Columbia. On February 15, Blackburn and Fortin had decided to venture out of bounds to backcountry ski. They eventually got lost and at the time, they had only prepared for a day trip so they only had two granola bars, no water, no matches, no backcountry skiing equipment (climbing skins, avalanche transceivers, avalanche probes, avalanche shovels, backpacks, compass, GPS, radio, or mobile telephone), and only had what they were wearing to keep them warm and dry (Petrovics, 2011). Bethel Park is a small town in Western Pennsylvania about 25 minutes outside the city of Pittsburgh. The community is tightly knit and work together to make the community a better place. Recently, the citizens of Bethel Park have had conflicted opinions about moving the local magistrate building from inside the police station in the town to its own separate building still within the district lines. The new building is just outside a neighborhood in the town. The people of the community are worried that the move will cause criminals to be brought into their neighborhood and could disrupt the peace that the neighborhood is used to.

Eight of the initial survivors died on the afternoon of 29 October when an avalanche cascaded down on them as they slept in the fuselage. For three days they survived in an appallingly confined space since the plane was buried under several feet of snow. Nando Parrado was able to poke a hole in the roof of the fuselage with a metal pole, providing ventilation. Among the dead was Liliana Methol, wife of survivor Javier Methol. Takeyce Taylor Winter in Alaska is known to be extremely cold, so it is always warned that people should not travel by themselves especially when the temperature hits fifty degrees below zero. Even though an old timer from Sulpher Creek warned him, that he should not travel the Klondike alone, a man set off on a journey with his husky wolf dog to meet up with some friends. When he started the journey he was excited, and as a newcomer in the Yukon, the cold did not faze him at all. As he got further into the journey he realize that he was not protected enough to withstand the cold, but the anxiety he had within, he didn’t pay much attention to it. Not knowing how dangerous of a situation he was putting himself into, along with his dog, he was just focused on meeting up with his friends.
Avalanches are very common in this area and could have quite possibly happened while they were camped out. An avalanche would of caused panic to the hikers and would explain why the tent was cut opened from the inside and was covered in snow. An avalanche would also explain why the remaining four hikers that had taken a few months to find were buried under about four meters of snow. The book Into Thin Air is a book that outlines the Mount Everest disaster, as factually correct it can. However, there is a person that is too blame for this disaster to happen. The main person responsible for the deaths of the Mount Everest disaster was Robert Hall. However, that does not mean Robert Hall was the only one at fault. Ultimately the blame falls on Ang Dorje, Robert Hall, and Ian Woodall, each for their own reasons, and ultimately Hall, and Fisher were responsible for the others.
Realization of Death Have you ever witnessed death? To me, seeing death, before your own eyes is the most “eye opening” experience that you can ever have. I have only witnessed this once within my lifetime and it was the passing of somebody I never knew. Seeing this man’s final demise has scarred me. It has given me a whole new outlook on life.
