General Motors and China’s SUV market
Performance:
China is the world’s largest market for the automobile industry and also the largest market for the US leader General Motors. GM is second only to the German Volkswagen in China in terms of sales volume. Thus, the stakes are high but growth is slowing down as the Chinese economy is growing at its slowest pace in two decades.
General Motors offers various brands in China including Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, Baojun, Wuling etc. Together with its partners, the company has sold a record 2,197,192 vehicles in China during the first eight months of this year. That was 2.3 % higher than the same period last year. This year, the three brands that have helped GM to stay afloat are Buick, Cadillac and

For example, the new SUV, Buick Envision 20T was launched in April and has been a big hit for GM in China. GM reports that Buick has had its best sales ever in China in the first eight months of the year. The brand’s sales increased 5.4 % year on year to 581,544 units. Envision’s contribution to the brand was not huge (57,000 units in the first half) but it is growing now. The increasing share of Buick Envision in the brand’s total sales is also financially beneficial for the company. The Envision is priced in the range of RMB 269,900 (about $43,450) to RMB 340,000 (about $54,700). The new SUV is a quality product that GM finds fit to export to US in near …show more content…
It has been on the market for last six weeks and has performed well all this while. Affordability is a great volume driver especially in emerging markets like China, India etc. After all, the local Chinese players are thriving on the Chinese middle class population which has still got a lot of potential in it even after suffering the stock market rout for a few months now. The local SUV builders have in fact gained some market share on the back of their low cost, low price strategy. Riding the success of its first SUV, Baojun brand sales jumped 282.5 % to 223,367 units, an all-time high from January to August.
Strong demand for several SUV and MPV models offered by GM helped the company resist the market slowdown in August. The Buick Envision and Baojun 560 were the growth leaders for GM in the SUV space during the month, rising 161.7 %, while sales of the Baojun 730 MPV more than doubled. As a whole, Buick’s trio of SUVs that includes Envision, Enclave and Encore continued to impress this year. Together, these three together doubled in sales through the first half of the
Management has shown their abilities over the years to weather the recent EPA changes and declining wood stove market. While their profit margin for return on assets decreased, they managed to still increase sales enough in their niche market to increase their asset turnover and in the end, increase their return on assets. Even with major deficits in their retained earnings, the company worked through the tough regulations and low cash flow to not only continually grow their business, but turn
However, automobiles like the Chevrolet, the Rambler and the Hudson Hornet were huge successes when it came to consumerism in the economy. Manufacturers in the automobile industry, would make small changes to every year’s model. These changes would persuade consumers to buy the new model and that they needed to update their cars every couple of years and ultimately expanded purchasing growth in the 50’s society.
When will Ford or GM believe that this may be a good time for them to build cars like the good old days? I can almost guarantee that people are going to be lining up to get these new American classics. But until these firms start taking note of their customers, you'll have people looking for old muscle cars to
Since last year, the country has become the company’s biggest market, and the iPhone even became China’s biggest-selling phone for a few months earlier this year. But the challenges are increasing. There are several reasons that apple was successful in China, whereas its competitors, such as Google have failed. Several times, deals with China Mobile were nearly to fell through and Apple seemed like walking away. However, they got to an agreement in the last minute.
In general, it is hard for foreign companies to establish themselves in the Asian market, especially in China, because of the strong cultural background. It will not work out well for a foreign company to adapt its marketing model to the Chinese market. Marketing models such as direct marketing of the brand, which works well in the American market, is likely to fail in the Chinese market. Although Groupon has spent millions into marketing its brand on the Chinese market, the Chinese customers were not ready to see the brand’s products being better as the one of its competitors. Chinese customers are less likely to be loyal to any brand due to their low levels of indulgence.

However, Toyota still sells more vehicles each year but the gap has narrowed down to less than 1.5 million cars. The board later approved the plant and allocated $1 billion for the construction of the plant scheduled to open in 2011.

However, since 2010, this longstanding quality reputation has been unabatingly shattered by increased vehicle recalls that have seen virtually every class of consumer affected (Rajasekera, 2). Recognizing that its reputation and brand is at stake, Toyota has endeavored to not only publicly apologize, but also settle a class-action law suits totaling $1.1 billion. While this strategy may look inept to many, research provide that leadership requires swift acknowledgement of mistakes and fitting solutions which is what Toyota has done.
