Should an innocent man be convicted of murder? Adnan was wrongfully convicted of this murder in 2000 and has spent 17 years in prison as an innocent man. On February 09, 1999, several weeks after Hae (Adnan’s ex-girlfriend) went missing (on January 13, 1999), she was found in Leakin park. She was a victim of murder by manual strangulation. On February 28, 1999, Adnan was arrested by the Baltimore City detectives; resulting in the case of Adnan Syed v.s. The State of Maryland. This case is highlighted by the podcast Serial, hosted by Sarah Koenig. Adnan is innocent because there is not enough physical and reliable witness evidence linking Adnan to the murder of Hae. One former partner of Cristina’s claimed, “she had been slipping for the past five years before her death” (Koenig, The Best Defense is a Good Defense). To explain this, since 1996, Christina slowly grew sick, and couldn’t do her job as well. In Adnan’s Case, “she would use a half speed pacing and the sing-songy aggression, she was without a clear outline, and her many punches never appeared to land. According to Adnan, She took so long to cross-examine people, it was hard to remember what the conversation was about” (Koenig, The Best Defense is a Good Defense). In other words, Christina studied over Adnan’s case but failed to provide clear reasons and counterclaims (against the state), which cost her the case. Another crucial piece of evidence against Cristina as a lawyer is her taking unreasonable amounts of money from her clients. “Cristina asked for $50,000 to represent Adnan, but doubled the cost by the end of the second trial. Additionally, she claimed Adnan’s parents needed to bring $10,000 in cash to the courthouse for a jury expert” (Koenig, The Best Defense is a Good Defense). To explain this, this is strange because she only needed $50K to represent him but wanted $100K. Additionally, lawyers use checks, and not cash as proof the money goes towards the trial. Lastly, “Cristina’s career collapsed in spring of 2001, she was taking her clients money and not doing what she promised to do and got caught by the state. Additionally, The state fund that compensates people when their lawyers misuse their money paid out a total of $282,328 on twenty-eight claims against Christina” (Koenig, The Best Defense is a Good Defense). This means not only was she taking unjust amounts of money from Adnan’s family but a total of over 280 thousand dollars from 28 cases. Adnan had an unfair trial because
STATEMENT OF THE CASE On January 13, 1999. the defendant Adnan Syed (seventeen), lived in Baltimore County, Maryland and was accused of the murder of his ex girlfriend, Hae Min Lee (seventeen). Jay Wilds is involved in the crime, an acquaintance of Adnan who claims to have helped bury the body of Hae Min Lee. Stephanie Mcpherson, was Jay Wilds girlfriend at the time of the murder.
After the trial where Adnan was convicted of 1st degree murder Gutierrez died of cancer. I believe that Gutierrez might have actually been suffering from cancer during the time she was Adnan’s lawyer but just didn’t realize it yet. So that might have actually impacted the fact that she was a sucky lawyer. Not the fact that there wasn’t enough evidence to prove if Adnan was guilty or
If there were sufficient evidence to back up the prosecutor’s claims, then Mrs. Miller would already be in jail. My conclusion from the case presented is that Miller was underpaid and that she claimed all of the income that she made during the years in question. Before her job in reality television, Miller had no prior experience with the amount of money that she started to make. A couple years before the show started, Miller filed for bankruptcy when she was in a bad spot in her life during these years. When the economy was down, keeping up with all of her bills became extremely difficult.
I am one-hundred percent sure that if someone tried to do it, it would be impossible.” This means that when Sarah tried to get a better understanding herself of went on within those 21 minutes she did not believe it to be possible for Adnan to do all the tasks within the amount of time given. Providing all the evidence that proves Adnan’s innocence and showing counter arguments as to why the state’s evidence against Adnan is unethical and insubstantial. This brings to question, how did Christina Gutierrez, Adnan’s former lawyer blow it? Well there is a saying that goes, “the best offense is a good defense,” so theoretically maybe Christina Gutierrez did not do her best ability to win the
Ms. Guiterrez had already failed to do precise research for evidence, and on top of that, she was diagnosed with diabetes and had to stay in the hospital. However, the defense attorney still accepted many cases from others, which shows her desire to get money. Ms. Guiterrez shouldn’t have accepted more cases because she couldn’t handle all of it at the time,
Adnan was tried and convicted of a murder based on evidence that was, at points, proven to be misleading or false. The witnesses in the case lied, the timeline the state had was faulty because of its reliance on the cell records, and there are several alibis who say Adnan was not able to commit the crime because he was in other locations. It appears that the state was just trying to pin the crime on anyone they could without looking further into many obvious holes in their understanding of what happened. While it is not entirely clear who killed Hae Min Lee, it is exceedingly clear that there is a minuscule amount of reliable proof that Adnan Syed was the one who killed her and so he should not have been convicted of the crime.
If you were charged for a murder you did not commit, what would you do? Adnan Syed was sentenced to prison after he was found guilty of murdering his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee. But there are a few small details that make significant complications within the case. Though many of these details cannot be fully proved nor entirely refuted, they could have been the reason for Adnan's rightful freedom. Today, he is incarcerated in a Baltimore prison awaiting appeal.
Although many people may not believe it, Adnan Syed is innocent considering the fact that much of what was said in court is practically hearsay and there is very small amounts of evidence that prove that he took the life of Hae Min Lee. When the case was presented in court, there were many errors that the State chose to omit when Adnan was being tried. For instance, much of the evidence was unfathomed and therefore showed that there was next to no physical evidence that linked him to the crime… “No DNA, no fibers, no hairs, no matching soil from
She represents herself making a plea that is as much about the judge and his outlook as it is about her, and her works
The law states that a defendant is innocent until proven guilty and because Adnan Syed is far from being proven due to lack of actual evidence. Whether you want to believe he was involved in this murder or not, there is no reason for him to spend one more day in jail. Yes many believe that certain inconsistencies and theories that are not actually reliable mean he is the one who committed this heinous crime. The reality is Adnan has an alibi, the reality is Adnan has no motive behind this act, the reality is there is no evidence out there to make Adnan serve the life sentence. I am confident that Adnan has 100% undeniably been wrongfully convicted of first degree murder.
This was quite the battle for Adnan Syed, a young oriental male who was accused of murdering his long-time girlfriend in January of 1999. Hae-Min Lee, Adnan’s girlfriend, went missing in January and her body was found buried in a local park 3 weeks later. Adnan Syed is innocent of killing Hae-Min Lee because of three reasons: Cristina Gutierrez, Adnan’s lawyer, failed to put him in a position to win the trial, Jay is not an effective witness, and the window of time does not match up. Adnan is not at fault
"Innocent until proven guilty. " That’s always been the law, so why was Adnan Syed sentenced 25 years to life without parole? January 13th 1999 Hae Min Lee goes missing. Friends and family described her as beautiful, smart, responsible, and athletic (she played Lacrosse and hockey).
This story alone ultimately convicted Adnan. No physical evidence was ever found. Reporter Sarah Koenig realized the patchy story of this case
Adnan Syed’s innocence Don’t you feel everyone should receive a fair trial when being accused of a crime? Well, 19 years ago, on January 13, 1999, a boy at Woodland High School in Baltimore named Adnan was accused of manual strangling of a girl named Hae Min Lee. He supposedly told Jay Wilds, a buddy of his, that he was going to kill her. After Hae’s missing body was recovered, Jay went to the police and the state used his testimony against Adnan. Recently, a serial podcast was developed by Sarah Koenig, a detective who goes deeper into the case and believes Adnan may be innocent.
Of course, many people think Adnan Syed is guilty of murdering Hae by contradicting himself, by saying, “I am in here for my own mistakes.” He might have been on the edge of confessing his guilt until Sarah caught this and asked what he meant, and quickly recovers from his mistake. Adnan also slips his tongue by saying that he wants people to only look at the evidence, and not his personality. If I were convicted of a crime I would certainly like to have my personality be looked at, if I were innocent. So they could see what good I have done.
